🇺🇸🇽🇰 Don’t Push Kosovo to Become Another Bosnia
We already have a dysfunctional state in the Balkans. The United States is right on principle but should not punish a staunchly loyal Kosovo in favor of a Serbia that has openly sided with China and Iran.
By Harry Bajraktari
The announcement that the United States has indefinitely suspended its planned Strategic Dialogue is bad news for Kosovo.
The people of Kosovo certainly do not deserve this. They are among the most pro-American people in the world, and their commitment to peace, stability, and democracy is indisputable.
They have expressed their will in the last national elections and rightly expect their elected legislators to do their job—form a new government and focus on their most important duty: serving the people. It is unfortunate that many months were wasted on meaningless political rituals instead of moving forward and making practical decisions.
The responsibility for this failure belongs to all political parties. The United States is right to express concerns about recent developments. That said, I worry that despite its good intentions, Washington is pushing Kosovo toward a situation similar to that of Bosnia.
On the surface, the demands of the Serb List party may seem to reflect the sentiment of the Serb community. In practice, they dominate the Serbian vote using intimidation and unfair pressure, Their recent recourse near the Constitutional Court seems more like an exercise in creating more dysfunction in Kosovo by exploiting technicalities.
In the Balkans, we already have a dysfunctional state in Bosnia because of the Belgrade-backed Republika Srpska. Allowing Serb List in Kosovo to paralyze state institutions will not improve the conditions of the Serbian community—it will only give President Vučić of Serbia a new avenue to interfere and create more instability.
Kosovo has its problems, and its government should be more open and willing to coordinate with its greatest ally, but there is no doubt where its loyalties lie. Caretaker Prime Minister Albin Kurti and all political parties in Kosovo supported President Donald Trump’s strike against Iran and applauded his policy of “peace through strength.”
The same cannot be said for President Vucic and Serbia. Trump’s decision was openly criticized in Belgrade, and Serbia reaffirmed its friendship with the Iranian regime.
Just recently, Vucic returned from China, where he joined Xi, Putin, Kim, and other world leaders in a show of defiance against America’s role in the world. Serbia has even held joint military exercises with China, signaling a deepening partnership.
Lista Srpska is completely under Vucic thumb, and no matter how much the international community and Kosovo try to accommodate them, they will continue to push the envelope.
Five years ago, President Vucic signed an agreement with President Trump in the Oval Office and has broken almost every item and promise made on that document. Yet, there is not even the slightest rebuke on his actions by the U.S. Embassy in Belgrade.
In this context, suspending the Strategic Dialogue with Kosovo—while planning to open one with Serbia, as expected by the end of this year—seems very unablanced and does not serve American interests in the region.
I applaud the response of President Vjosa Osmani and hope that the United States and Kosovo—under the current or future government—take the necessary steps to resume the Strategic Dialogue for the sake of peace and stability in the Balkans and Europe.
