Leila Khaled made history in 1969 as the first woman to hijack an aircraft when the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) redirected TWA Flight 840, which was traveling from Rome to occupied Jaffa (“Tel Aviv”), to Damascus.

After landing, all passengers were quickly released except six “Israeli” nationals; two of them were held until December in exchange for Syrian and Egyptian prisoners. The hijackers themselves were briefly detained in Syria and released without charges by mid-October.
