IMO the recently improved Korea-Japan relations partly stem from Korea catching up to Japan, economically+culturally

Japanese: have a harder time looking down on Koreans as backwards

Koreans: less envy/jealously, less ‘if only Japan hadn’t colonized us we would’ve been rich’

The common belief on Western internet is that the South Korean economy is a Chaebol-led technocracy but in reality it's much closer to a government-led bureaucracy, just ask the investment bankers, their primary reason of being reluctant to invest in the Korean market is the severe government control

Historicallty Korean society was ruled by a strong central government and the growth of Chaebols were only possible because of economic intervention by dictators. Mega corporations that went against the government were quickly dismantled (Kukje Group was the 5th biggest conglomerate in 1985 but was forcibly dissolved within a week)

The government still asserts massive influence over the economy and the Chaebols. Samsung's Lee Jae-yong served prison time for his involvement in the Park Geun-hye scandal and cases of suicide of Chaebol owners caused by targetted government crackdowns exist
