He made it to the small platform surrounding the steeple’s cross and planted a small flag. As it was recalled, ‘loud cheers were then given for the intrepid climber’ by the crowd below.
THROWBACK THURSDAY: Our founder, Fr. Edmund Wood (1830 - 1909), was known for his athleticism and fearlessness in his ‘young and foolish days.’
Around 1860, as nearby Christ Church Cathedral was nearing completion, he took on a dare to climb its 224 feet steeple.
From an opening on the Union Street side of the clock tower, Fr. Edmund made his way up the steeple by carefully climbing on iron staples embedded in the stonework.

Blessed be the holy Trinity, and the undivided Unity: we will confess him, because he hath shewed his mercy upon us. O Lord our Governour: how excellent is thy Name in all the world.
THROWBACK THURSDAY: Back in the day, our processional cross (still in use today) was highly controversial.
Even though Saint John's was an Anglo-Catholic parish, the cross was criticized by some as being "too Catholic." 🧵
In 1876, our founder, Fr. Edmund Wood, published a sermon defending its usage.
"What more fitting symbol could there be, then, when the ministers of Christ crucified, go to celebrate the memorial of His Death, than the sign of His Sacred Passion, carried before them?"
🕯️ TUESDAY AFTER PENTECOST 🕯️

He fed them also with the finest wheat flour, alleluia: and with honey from the rock hath he satisfied them, alleluia, alleluia. Sing we merrily unto God our helper: make a cheerful noise unto the God of Jacob.
🕯️ THE DAY OF PENTECOST BEING THE FIFTIETH DAY AFTER EASTER COMMONLY CALLED WHITSUNDAY 🕯️

Like for many churches, repairs and restoration have been a necessity for St John's. In the 1980s, our steeple had to be taken down for an overhaul. ⛪️
Our former rector, Fr Oswald Slattery, is seen posing with the steeple before it was put back in place.
