“I Shoot. I Done.” The Killing of a Canadian Immigration Officer by Mewa Singh

Guru Nanak Jahaz, funded by the Canadian government and supported by several Punjabi immigration consultancies, depicts the 1914 assassination of Canadian immigration officer William C. Hopkinson by Mewa Singh inside the Vancouver courthouse corridor.

Mewa Singh, celebrated as a “Canadian shaheed” by some today, was motivated by the Komagata Maru incident, where Canada denied entry to hundreds of his countrymen from India for violating the continuous journey regulation, and by his belief that Hopkinson’s intelligence network was harming the Sikh community.

In the film’s portrayal of the killing, Singh empties one pistol into Hopkinson, then continues firing with a second until both weapons are out of ammunition. Hopkinson was unarmed. Singh surrendered on the spot, pleaded guilty, and was hanged in January 1915.

We need to have an honest conversation about the film, Guru Nanak Jahaz, as well as the intentional misrepresentation of the Komagata Maru story in this country.

This film, which celebrates the assassination of a Canadian immigration officer, William Hopkinson, by Mewa Singh, received federal government funding and listed two sitting MPs in the credits of the film, Tim Uppal and Sukh Dhaliwal.

The Komagata Maru story gets to the heart of the immigration issue in Canada.

Does Canada have the right to deny people entry into the country based on their country of origin? Can the government turn the taps off for certain countries?

This incident is still being used today to perpetuate a story a victimhood and institutional racism in Canada against Indians.

The real martyr in this story is Hopkinson. He died serving his King and his country. Working undercover to expose the workings of a violent, anti-British ethnic socialist movement.

The Komagata Maru incident was started by members of the Ghadar Party, a violent, anti-British socialist group that intended to undermine Canadian immigration law to advance their own ethnic and political goals.

William Hopkinson worked undercover to document the actions of this group and was murdered because of it.
