@blgtylr oh that's so interesting! yeah settlers does evoke an earlier vibe...and my answer is for industrial canning. but i think the romanticism of the ""frontier"" still lives on, into this century (like, look at how we talk about space) so perhaps the language is intentionally dated.

@blgtylr the european immigrants of the 19th century, many who came west for the gold rush or immigrated and worked as miners up and down the coast. salmon are the ecological lifeblood of the pnw...and yet we decided to dam every single river and put the hanford plant on the columbia 🙃
