Most religion in the world operates on the principle of ‘I obey—therefore I am accepted by God.’ The basic operating principle of the gospel is ‘I am accepted by God through the work of Jesus Christ—therefore I obey.
“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel.” Matthew 1:23
Which means, “God with us.”
Not as adversary, but as friend and protector and helper and satisfier.
A Christian's identity and self-regard rest in a love we cannot lose, and a beauty put upon us that does not dim. That beauty is legal now (the perfect righteousness of Christ) and will be actual and full later. See C.Hodge, Princeton Sermons, "The Intercession of Christ."
“Who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.” (1 Peter 2:24)
“Let the wicked forsake his way . . . let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.” Isaiah 55:7
If you think you have sinned yourself out of the possibility of forgiveness, this is God’s invitation to you today.
“Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree’).” (Galatians 3:13)
“Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness.” 2 Corinthians 11:14–15
O Lord, give us discernment!
For not all bright angels or righteous servants are what they seem.
