Not only did the #Penrose family settle in #Reedness the 23 and Me DNA match indicated that the family are linked to the #Wheldrake Penroses, some of whom relocated to Ireland in 1600s and then later to #Pennsylvania
Find My Past’s digital parish records helped with the evidence.

Have just checked the records of Find My Past and Family Search and there were two John Penroses born in Wheldrake in 1605 and 1606 so the John #Penrose buried at #Cowick Hall in #EastCowick could have been one of those two. An interesting circuitous connection.

Please see previous Tweets. Sir John Dawnay’s younger brother Thomas Dawnay owned land at #Escrick Yorks very near #Wheldrake and married Elizabeth Newton of #Snaith. Snaith is adjacent to Cowick Hall and to this day there are Penroses living in the area

In fact the #Penrose family may have arrived in Yorkshire as Dawnay retainers in the 14C. It is interesting that John Penrose was buried 21.9.1682 at Cowick Hall. He was prob born in 1609. He clearly had links with the Dawnay family of Cowick Hall.

The Wheldrake story indicates that the earliest #Penrose incomer to Wheldrake was from Sithney in Cornwall in the early 1500s. AFAIK there is no proof of this. In fact there were Penroses in Howden and Beverley in Yorkshire at the time of the Wars of the Roses.
