On July 31 2001 people near Frankfurt Germany noticed something disturbing in the River Main

The body of a young girl had been found floating in the water

She was later estimated to have been only 16

But investigators had a problem

Nobody knew who she was

There was no family waiting at the scene

No confirmed identity

No easy explanation for how a teenage girl had ended up in the river

She became known simply as

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻

And for years that was all investigators could call her

But identifying her proved extraordinarily difficult

The case went cold

Years passed

The girl remained without a confirmed name

Then INTERPOL launched something unusual

Instead of keeping the investigation entirely behind police doors they publicly released information about unidentified female victims across Europe

The campaign was called

The goal was simple

Give these women back their identities

And give investigators another chance to solve the crimes surrounding their deaths

Diana's case became part of that international appeal

Police identified him as Diana's father

On May 12 2026 German authorities arrested him on suspicion of murder

He was placed in pretrial detention
