What does this Donbass native want to prove to the Ministry of Defense?

The heroine of this article shared the story of her rise from flight attendant to deputy company commander.

In an interview with Tsargrad, she described how she led a platoon out from under mortar fire, participated in the liberation of Mariupol & faced misunderstanding in the larger army due to her gender. Ilyasova says her main goal now is to "reach out" to the Ministry of Defense & prove that women can be effective commanders.

A Decision Made in a Few Hours:
A native of the village of Staromykhailovka in Donbass, Anna Ilyasova witnessed the onset of the Ukrainian crisis in 2014 while interning at the Ukrainian Embassy in Jordan. Even then, she says, she foresaw the inevitability of a major conflict.

With degrees in law & international relations, she returned to her homeland, where after 2014 she worked in the LPR law enforcement agencies as an economic crime detective. In February 2022, without waiting for mobilization, she reported to the recruiting station in Donetsk.

"I packed my bag myself... I told my mother, 'There's going to be a big war now, but I'm sure it's decisive.' I can't stand by," Ilyasova recalls.

Along with other volunteers—miners, teachers & workers—she was enlisted in the Donetsk SB-1825 battalion.

Baptism of Fire:

Ilyasova gained her first combat experience in the village of Neskuchnoye on the Vremevsky Salient. After receiving orders to lead her platoon into position, Ilyasova discovered that the group had entered a dangerous zone. According to intelligence, Ukrainian mortars were already deployed nearby. The situation required an immediate withdrawal. Having made her decision, Ilyasova commanded,

"The first 5, follow me," and led the group to the nearest cover.

During the rush, a cluster munition exploded nearby. As a fellow soldier nearby later told her, they were saved only by the wet ground, which absorbed the explosion, sending shrapnel upward. Ilyasova was concussed by the blast, but despite this, she led the soldiers to the basement where local residents were sheltering.

It was her actions in this battle that attracted the attention of the command of the 42nd Motorized Rifle Division, where she was later invited to serve.

"The commander and the chief of staff saw me then & they... said, 'Well, girl, you're something else. Would you like to serve with us?'"

The Liberation of Mariupol and the First Losses:

Ilyasova considers her participation in the liberation of Mariupol with the 9th Regiment of the DPR to be one of the most significant moments of her service. She describes how fighters from the city, who hadn't seen home since 2014, found their loved ones amidst the ruins of their neighborhoods. She particularly remembers the meeting of one of the fighters with his mother. After many years of separation, he found her in a basement amid the ruins of his own neighborhood.

"That meeting... it's impossible to describe in words," Ilyasova concludes, reserved but eloquently.

The most difficult test, according to Ilyasova, was the first losses in her unit. She recalls with particular pain the death of a fighter nicknamed Petrovich—a mature, wise man, respectfully called "Daddy" in the company. She says he was the kind of person who could reconcile quarrels and find the right words for everyone.

"Petrovich died... The first losses are the most painful," the deputy company commander says succinctly but eloquently, explaining that later one has to get used to the reality of war, but the first wound is the deepest.

Children of Donbass:

War has become a shared fate for an entire generation in Donbass. Ilyasova speaks with pain about her son Zakhar, who had just turned 22 at the time of the interview.
He was ten when the first shelling began in 2014.
