its disconcerting how many americans are defensive about outsource work. ive experienced this both wrt the anim industry and now w merch artists, and its bleak!!! its not abt whether or not youre working with sweatshops or the best chinese factory w up to par labour practices--
last tweet on this topic. every person i've spoken to defending this practice has either been ignorant or unhinged but always driven by reactionary white guilt to justify their active role in american imperialism and that's all there really is to it lmao
US artists could literally just say "i can't divest from my livelihood atm but i'm gonna work towards it" but instead they throw tantrums about how they have no choice but to exploit workers overseas which. isn't a great look when your terrorist nation is facilitating a genocide
this should push us to realize that no one should benefit from global wage inequity, that we should be introspective about our own contribution and reliance on the US empire’s cruel and backhanded methods of keeping prices low, but you go to this weepy whiney doomerism instead
this thread assumes sweatshops are the only problem, and doesn't really address the issue of economic imperialism - why we think it's okay to pay someone less for the same work because they live somewhere else, and the same logic that justifies outsourcing on a corporate scale.
op is not fundamentally misguided you just dont want to face with the fact that small businesses are just another cog in the exploitation of cheap labour
people are bustin out the ol' "no ethical consumption under capitalism" line to justify their addiction to exploitative labour practices but here's the twist; you are no longer a consumer once you're manufacturing shit to sell, you're an active participant baybeeee
✨🎊🕺🏻💃🏻🕺🏻🎊✨
capitalism has made us so far removed from the means of production - how many of us can say that we know how long a shift is at a factory, what kinds of chemicals and fumes a worker is exposed to, how much they get paid an hour?
as artists we need to take a step back and realize that it IS worthwhile to have conversations about outsourcing labor and production for our merchandise. we should not take this as an attack, but an opportunity to have difficult conversations with ourselves and others and learn.
Not the notesapp… you misunderstand my fundamental problem with the outsourcing practise. if we can’t agree that is okay, but i don’t want to be misrepresented.
ngl i think artists should think more about the labor conditions of the people they outsource their plastic trinkets and custom manufactured plush to. especially if youre vocal of the ethics and environmental impact of AI art.
SOON!!! (like in a month)
