When Franklin joined Charlie Brown in 1968, it quietly turned a beloved comic strip into a civil rights milestone. Franklin was introduced to Peanuts at the height of the Civil Rights Movement, just weeks after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. He was one of the first Black characters to regularly appear in a mainstream American comic without being reduced to stereotypes.

Created by Charles M. Schulz, Franklin wasn’t written as a lesson or a punchline. He was simply a kid — polite, confident, thoughtful — who talked with Charlie Brown, shared lunch with him, and later sat beside him in class. That simple act mattered. At a time when schools across the U.S. were still segregated or violently resisting integration, seeing a Black child and a white child treated as equals in a national comic strip was quietly radical.

Schulz faced backlash for Franklin’s inclusion, especially when he depicted Franklin sitting next to Charlie Brown in school. He refused to back down. By insisting Franklin remain part of the strip without stereotypes or fanfare, Schulz normalized what much of America still resisted: equality.

Franklin didn’t shout slogans or march in the streets — but his presence helped shape how a generation of children saw race, friendship, and belonging. Sometimes progress doesn’t arrive loudly. Sometimes it shows up in the funny pages.

My son is a senior in high school who works thirty hours a month at a sporting goods retailer.

He submitted a written time-off request four weeks in advance for his high school graduation ceremony and family dinner. The supervisor signed the paper and pinned it to the bulletin board.

When the weekly roster was posted, the store manager had scheduled him for a closing shift right through the exact hours of his graduation ceremony.

When my son brought the signed approval sheet to the manager’s desk, the man shrugged and said:

"Business needs change. If you don't show up for your shift, consider it job abandonment. In the real world, you learn that your job comes before personal plans."

My son sat in the car in our driveway, completely defeated, genuinely believing he had to choose between walking across the graduation stage or keeping his job.

I walked into the store with him, found the manager, and had my son hand over his nametag and uniform shirt on the spot.

I looked the manager in the eye and said:

"In the real world, you are a retail manager attempting to manipulate a teenager into missing a once-in-a-lifetime milestone he worked twelve years to earn, all to fold sweatpants on a Friday evening. His resignation is effective immediately."

The manager stammered, turned red, and started offering to find shift coverage on the spot. We walked out.

Teach your children early: an hourly job that demands you sacrifice your education, your milestones, and your self-worth does not value you as a human being. Never let an entry-level supervisor convince your child that their future is negotiable.

The White House is hiding a report about your taxes until after you vote.

Every year the IRS publishes data showing what people at every income level deducted and what they owed. This year’s version is the first real look at the big Republican tax law from 2025. It was supposed to come out in July. Then September. It’s now the middle of October.

The official line is they want the numbers to be accurate. What a convenient time to suddenly care about that.
