🇺🇦 🇷🇺 Ukraine is revealing the third phase of Operation Vivaldi around Lyman, including more than 250 Russian prisoners, another 51 km² retaken and Soviet armored vehicles converted into unmanned kamikaze systems. Much of this happened before it appeared on the public map.

Ukraine’s 3rd Army Corps says more than 250 Russian soldiers were captured during the third phase of the counteroffensive, with Russian troops surrendering in groups alongside officers, drone operators and artillerymen.

The Corps also announced the liberation of Nove, Ridkodub and Katerynivka, while Ukrainian forces restored control over Karpivka and Novomykhailivka.

Another 51 km² were retaken during this phase, according to commander Andrii Biletskyi, bringing the territory officially claimed as recovered during Operation Vivaldi to 176 km².

One of the more unusual details is visible in the footage released today. Ukrainian forces converted old Soviet BTR-60 armored personnel carriers into unmanned kamikaze ground vehicles, packed them with explosives and sent them against some of the strongest Russian fortifications.

Deception also played a major role. Biletskyi says Russian commanders were led to believe the main Ukrainian attack would come along the Shandryholove–Zelena Dolyna axis and committed reserves there. Ukraine’s actual main effort was directed toward Nove, a key Russian position on the bridgehead.

“The Russians slept through the real strike,” Biletskyi said.

The 3rd Army Corps puts Russian personnel losses during this phase at around 2,000, including more than 250 captured. Those figures are Ukrainian military claims and cannot be independently verified.

There is also an important timing distinction. Ukraine is disclosing these details now, but analysts following the battlefield say some of the operations described in this third phase occurred months ago. French analyst Clément Molin places the main advances around Nove in May and June.

The current fighting has already moved beyond parts of the newly disclosed operation, with Ukrainian forces continuing to pressure the Russian salient north of Lyman.

Operation Vivaldi is therefore being revealed differently from the way it was fought: much of the battlefield movement came first, while the details of how Ukraine achieved it are only now emerging.

Despite the fact that the frontlines are still moving in this area, one thing can be said already:

The third Battle of Lyman in this war is basically over and Ukraine won. Again.

After eliminating most of the northern salient around Lyman, around 250 Russian soldiers were captured. This is substantial number given that in previous instances Russians were quite effective in running away. The number indicates that multiple Russian positions were overrun while many more were cut off.

It is also likely that the southern salient of the Russian occupation is under pressure.

It is likely that Russians will try it a fourth time, but an encirclement of this Ukrainian city in the Donetsk region is once more as far away as it was around one year ago. From an operational point of view this is a major setback for Moscow.

As expected, Putin has signed today a decree increasing the size of the Russian army at 2,441,630 personnel, including 1,550,500 military personnel, effectively immediately.

It replaces all previous decrees in that matter and marks the seventh iteration of Russia's mobilization efforts since start of the full scale war in February 2022.
