Judge Sentences Officer Who Killed Daunte Wright to 2 Years — Minneapolis, MN — Feb 18, 2022
Former Brooklyn Center police officer Kim Potter was sentenced to 2 years in prison for the shooting death of 20-year-old Daunte Wright during a 2021 traffic stop. She said she meant to use her Taser but drew her gun instead.
Potter was convicted of first- and second-degree manslaughter in December 2021. Under Minnesota guidelines, the presumptive sentence for the top charge is just over 7 years, but the judge granted a significantly lower term, calling the case a “tragic mistake” rather than typical criminal recklessness.
With credit for good behavior, Potter was expected to serve about 16 months in prison and the remainder on supervised release. She was released in April 2023.
