An Update On Our Journey
to everyone who has supported us, we owe you a big update, and a heartfelt apology for not giving one sooner
the past few months have been incredibly difficult for our team, and we wanted to wait until we had real clarity on what came next before putting out a public statement
crazy to think that it was just over a year ago that we launched our v2
@ipdotworld has always been a manifestation of our love for memecoins, internet culture, and the belief that memes could become one of the biggest unlocks for bringing retail on-chain
a lot of that conviction came from watching the TikTok meta explode in late ‘24 - our thesis remains that gen-z internet culture sits at the epicenter of where culture is created today, and that one of crypto’s greatest unlocks is finding the right incentive alignment between creators, their communities, and on-chain degens
our ambition was never to build another launchpad, but to build a new world where culture could be financialized in a way that genuinely rewarded the people who created and grew it
then an opportunity came to us through Story, now DATA Foundation
given that we were all sol degens, we knew from day 1 that building a meme product on an ip chain would be a controversial and unconventional path
but they gave us a chance, and we saw a way to integrate the ip narrative into the product that felt genuinely meaningful: reimagining ip distribution from a bottom-up, community-first perspective
so we went all in, and that eventually became @ipdotworld
what followed was a crazy journey
our v2 was when we first started seeing real promise. we made the decision to work with @hobbikats, one of the most recognizable cat creators on TikTok, and for the first time saw glimpses of what this model could become when recognizable cultural figures entered these markets with real alignment between creators, communities, and traders
then came pinkfong
many of you already know what happened. while we absolutely take responsibility for the operational shortcomings on our side, we still stand by our view that the incident was an extraordinary black-swan event, compounded by what we adamantly maintain was gross negligence on the counterparty side outside of our control
the incident exposed real weaknesses in our own operations and taught us where stronger guardrails were needed, but also reinforced our conviction that the underlying model itself could work with the right safeguards
unfortunately, the fallout and misunderstandings surrounding the incident decimated much of the traction we had built and effectively killed the product
everything our team had spent years working toward suddenly felt like it had disappeared overnight
but rather than give up, we tried again
toward the end of the year, we made the decision to return to what had motivated us in the first place, and Story remained supportive as we explored that next iteration
instead of retrofitting existing IP into memecoins, we wanted to build closer to the original vision we had always wanted to pursue: going all in on TikTok virality, UGC, creators, and incentives that aligned the people creating culture with the people trading around it
despite how short that experiment ultimately was, the early results were genuinely encouraging
we started seeing organic creator adoption and a model where protocol fees could actually help creators participate in and benefit from the markets forming around them
for the first time since v2, it felt like we were starting to see signs of real pmf
at the same time, Story’s priorities were evolving
as the ecosystem began focusing more heavily on AI and other areas, it became clear that the direction we wanted to pursue with @ipdotworld - memes, creators, and consumer internet culture - was becoming increasingly distinct from Story’s broader roadmap
we’re grateful to Story for the opportunity to build https://t.co/kUXvyzM589 and for the support they provided throughout the journey
our paths were simply moving in different directions, and that left us facing a difficult reality
without the same ecosystem alignment and resources behind the direction we wanted to pursue, keeping https://t.co/kUXvyzM589 operating at the level we wanted became increasingly difficult
eventually, resource constraints forced us to make painful decisions, including parting ways with most of the team that had put everything into this project
that was easily the hardest part
our team cared about @ipdotworld far beyond a normal job - people sacrificed time, financial security, relationships, and enormous parts of their personal lives simply because they believed in what we were building and wanted to keep it alive
the past few months were some of the hardest we’ve had - focused on survival, rebuilding from the ground up, and making whatever sacrifices were necessary to get ourselves back into a position to keep pursuing this mission
but there is a silver lining
while circumstances pulled some of us in different directions, the people behind @ipdotworld remain deeply connected and more aligned than ever around the same mission that brought us together in the first place
to every trencher who traded with us, created with us, gave us feedback, defended us, or simply stuck around while things went quiet - we’re sorry this chapter ended so abruptly, and we appreciate the hell out of your support
and we want everyone to know one thing:
this isn’t over
the name may change
the form may change
the venue may change
but the product vision and conviction behind all of this remain the same
we’re not done yet
soon
so which type of ownership should you pick?
→ creator - if there's a known person who deserves credit for the idea
→ community - if it's about building movements around shared culture
both get verified, earn fees and have treasuries

community tokens: idea that belongs to a group of people
represents movements, cults, and shared culture
after verification, holders get access to vested supply and fees,
that can be managed via community treasury
