In the spring of 1944, as hundreds of thousands of Hungarian Jews were deported to their deaths, one man’s background as a disciplined former military officer gave him an unexpected and terrifying role inside the gates of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Erno “Zvi” Spiegel did not carry a weapon or lead an armed uprising. Instead, through quiet ingenuity, compassion & extraordinary moral courage, he saved dozens of young boys from Josef Mengele’s pseudo-scientific experiments and the gas chambers.

Born on 5 January 1915 in Budapest, Spiegel’s family later moved to Munkács (now Mukachevo), then part of Czechoslovakia and home to a thriving Jewish community. He served as an officer in the Czechoslovak military, a detail that would later shape his fate.

In May 1944, during the frantic deportation of Hungarian Jews organised by Adolf Eichmann, the 29-year-old Spiegel arrived at Auschwitz-Birkenau with his family, including his twin sister Magda, who was married and had a seven-year-old son.

On the selection ramp, chaos reigned. Families were torn apart in seconds. Magda, her son and their mother were initially directed towards the gas chambers. Mengele, obsessed with twins for his genetic research, spotted the siblings and pulled Magda back. Spiegel himself was selected because he was a twin.

When the Nazi doctor learned of Spiegel’s military background, he saw an opportunity. He appointed the young prisoner “Zwillingsvater” - the Twins’ Father and placed him in charge of the barracks housing around eighty young twin boys, some as young as four or five.

Mengele’s warning was blunt: maintain absolute order or face immediate execution. Spiegel could not stop the doctors from taking the children for painful and often lethal examinations. Yet within the narrow confines of his authority, he chose to resist.

Spiegel was required to help the boys complete detailed genetic questionnaires destined for the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute in Berlin. Non-twins faced immediate selection for the gas chambers. Using a fountain pen he had managed to keep or retrieve from the piles of confiscated belongings, Spiegel falsified records on multiple occasions. He altered birth dates so that unrelated boys of similar age could pass as twins, smuggling them into the twin barracks.

One documented case involved two boys, György & István Kun, whose differing birthdays would have condemned them. Spiegel changed the dates and saved their lives.

He also created a makeshift school inside the barracks. The boys affectionately called him “Spiegel Bácsi” - Uncle Spiegel.

In secret lessons, he taught them geography, history & mathematics, preserving a fragile sense of childhood and normality amid unimaginable horror. He comforted boys who cried for their murdered mothers and instilled rules of mutual responsibility: they had to share any food or possessions, and look out for one another.

Spiegel understood the deadly logic of Mengele’s experiments. A living twin often served as a control; if one died during testing, the healthy twin was frequently killed for a comparative autopsy. By sharing his own meagre rations, monitoring health & morale, and keeping the boys together, Spiegel helped protect entire pairs.

His courage extended beyond daily care. On one occasion, a new SS doctor named Thilo selected all the twin boys for the gas chambers and ordered the barracks sealed. Spiegel broke out, ran to the guards’ station and demanded to speak with Mengele. He informed the “Angel of Death” of the order. Mengele, furious, immediately countermanded it and saved the boys.

The iPad remains the most pointless device in apple’s lineup.

I’ve pretty much owned every single one including the current iPad Pro with the matte screen. It’s been collecting dust. Still haven’t figured out what to use it for.

- I don’t draw.
- Most of my work, iPhone 17 pro max works.
- Serious work, MacBook Air or pro.
- Netflix etc? Apple TV

What am I using an iPad for?

Someone please prove me wrong.

I so want to love it but just can’t figure out where it fits into my workflow.
