Latest Fox survey finds the Iran war a 4% issue with voters

From @kausmickey, an argument that, for Trump, while it's important to deliver the right economic message, it's also true that "Voters have their own 'lived' sense of the economy, and trying to talk them out of it rarely produces big shifts." Therefore, to really help win the midterms, what Trump really needs to do, the argument continues, is "convince the public he has a plausible plan to end the Iran conflict on OK terms fairly soon" because "the war was a gross violation of what Trump campaigned on and the point at which his presidency seemed to come undone." The problem with this suggestion, as reasonable as it is, is that there might not be any good way to "end the Iran conflict on OK terms fairly soon."

Amb. Shapiro's analysis of Israel's drop in opinion polls is incoherent, and ignores major explanatory variables. For one, it makes no mention of the massive campaign, funded in part by hostile foreign government, to demonize Israel and spread complete lies about the war and civilian casualties. Hamas members were uncritically treated as journalists and neutral sources by the Western media. The UN falsely announced 40,000 babies were going to starve. They created a narrative of genocide. This was as much of a campaign as any of the battles in the war, and it is absurd to ignore it. Democrats fell for this, but Shapiro seems to give them a pass.

As for Shapiro's specific claims - could he show us a war in urban terrain with the enemy illegally hiding behind civilians with a lower combatant-civilian casualty rate? Saying civilian casualties were "too" high is synonymous with saying Israel should have stopped 1/3 of the way through, when the Biden Admin demanded they leave Hamas in Rafah.

As for the war with Iran, this is a war started by the United States, with Israel as a crucial ally. Numerous other regional countries like Saudi supported it too - is their popularity down? According to Shapiro, opposing the policies of a Democratic president - bad for popularity; supporting the policies of a Republican president -also bad.

The Iran war, as well as Lebanese and Syrian campaigns, have had very low civilian casualties by any metric - but those are no good either.

The "wave of Jewish terror" Shapiro describes is itself massively exaggerated; actual civilian criminal violence by Israelis against Palestinians, of course unacceptable, is at levels comparable with crime rates of the safest American cities. But according to Shapiro's data, the greatest peak of Palestinian terror ever resulted in their greatest gains in popularity, so this explanation also doesn't hold up.

Shapiro admits that nothing short of the perennial demand of a Palestinian state will actually satisfy the critics on the Left. But he has just told Israelis they will have no support to save themselves from such a state should it not actually bring peace.

The reality is that Israel is a political liability for Democrats because their energetic growing Islamist and DSA camps are against Israel in survivable conditions, and they are calling the shots. Shapiro hopes new elections will quiet things down just a enough to reduce the dissonance for people like himself.

One final takeaway from these polls is that they show that public opinion is very malleable and transitory, especially when subject to influence campaigns. When asking Israelis to weigh their lives and limbs, which don't swing back when lost, against American public opinion, pointing to the fickleness of the latter is hardly convincing.

If you read Unfreedom of the Press, which has been out for several years, you'll see how John Adams, Abraham Lincoln, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Roosevelt, John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, and Barack Obama used the power of government to eviscerate press outlets -- from jailing journalists, shutting down newspapers, directing IRS audits of newspapers, unleashing widespread monitoring of press organizations, and a lot more that was a lot worse than banning them from the White House. Whatever your view, at least know the facts and the history of what has taken place since our founding.
