Dolly Parton’s legacy at Dollywood extends beyond music, shows and attractions — it also helped keep a remarkable piece of American railroad history alive. The Dollywood Express traces its roots to Rebel Railroad, which opened in 1961, and today carries guests through the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains behind genuine historic steam locomotives. Among them is No. 192 “Klondike Katie,” a 1943 Baldwin 2-8-2 built for the U.S. Army Transportation Corps that later worked on the White Pass & Yukon Route before coming to Tennessee. No. 70 “Cinderella,” another former White Pass & Yukon locomotive, dates to 1938. When Dollywood opened in 1986, Dolly helped elevate the railroad into one of the park’s signature experiences, allowing generations of visitors to hear, see and feel authentic steam-powered history in motion. More than six decades after the railroad first opened, these locomotives aren’t museum pieces — they’re still doing what they were built to do.
