The UK’s leading renewable energy trade association. We're building a future energy system powered by clean electricity: better for consumers & the environment.
📢 Public across the UK backs clean power to strengthen UK energy security 📢
A new report, commissioned by RenewableUK alongside ten other leading energy trade bodies and published today, shows almost two-thirds (63%) of the public across the UK think clean power strengthens the UK’s security, which is held as a majority view across every political persuasion:
'Watt Communities Want: Six Insights into UK Public Opinion', sets out the views of 996 adults in Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland, who were surveyed between March 23 and April 20 this year 🗓️
It highlights 6️⃣ key insights:
People know clean energy makes the country more secure 🔒
Bills remain the top concern, but voters support the need to spread infrastructure costs over many years 💷
Climate change and air pollution still matter 🌍
The public will back a flexible, storage-led energy system 🔋
Clean energy is now an industrial opportunity 🛠️
Confusion remains around the reality of today’s energy system 🤔
Commenting on the findings, our CEO Tara Singh (@RenewableUKCEO) said:
“The striking findings contained in this report show a clear desire from the public for investment without further delay, both to enhance and reinforce our grid infrastructure, as well as to accelerate the transition to a smarter and more flexible clean energy system. This is broadly consistent across the political spectrum and, crucially, shows the public has no desire to revert to a reliance on fossil fuels. Rather, the British people want greater security, lower bills and economic growth – all of which clean energy can provide with the right policy and regulatory framework to minimise delays and streamline delivery.”

The UK is a global leader in offshore wind installation and deployment, second only to China, reflecting the scale, expertise and capability developed across the country 🌍
But offshore wind is more than just turbines at sea. It's delivered through a UK-wide supply chain, with investment supporting manufacturing, ports and O&M bases across the country 🏗️
These supply chains create long-term, skilled employment and regional economic value, whilst the build-out of domestic capability strengthens our energy security and resilience 💪
Offshore wind supply chains are a long-term national asset, rooted in local communities, with Government initiatives like the Clean Industry Bonus helping unlock new private investment of around £3.4 billion 💷
This is opening up new opportunities for the UK to manufacture more turbine blades, towers, foundations, cables and other key components. And, by focusing on these high-value components and services, the UK could deliver an extra £25bn to the economy over the next ten years 📆
Find out more about the offshore wind supply chain and hear from our Head of Supply Chain, Ajai Ahluwalia, below 👇
And don't forget you can meet Ajai and many other representatives from across the supply chain at #RUKGOW26, taking place next week in Manchester. There’s still time to register!

Late last year, we marked 2️⃣5️⃣ years since the UK’s first offshore wind farm began to generate clean power, paving the way for a major new industry which is now playing a central role in the UK’s transition to renewable energy.
The offshore wind sector is at the heart of the development of a series of regional clusters, the rejuvination of coastal areas and driving of export opportunities. Formed as a result of the Offshore Wind 2019 Sector Deal, the UK's Offshore Wind Clusters showcase regional capabilities, knowledge and networks to provide valuable insights into the offshore sector.
The Humber Offshore Wind Cluster is home to the successful Siemens Energy blade factory and installation port, which makes it a leading light in UK efforts to double blade capacity as well as grow the country's footprint in offshore wind installation.
Meanwhile, on the south bank, the ports of Grimsby and Immingham play a leading role supporting the operation and maintenance of a wide range of wind farms, including mature assets served by CTVs and GW+ farms supplied by a fleet of SOVs. New wind farm growth in the North Sea and beyond provides future market opportunities for the region, with its capabilities aligning well to the national priority areas of Advanced Turbine Technology and Next-Generation Installation, Operations, and Maintenance.

Today @energygovuk published the Government's proposed level for the seventh Carbon Budget, which sets a science-led target of ~8️⃣7️⃣% emissions reduction for the period 2038 to 2042, as endorsed by the Environmental Audit Committee and @theCCCuk.
The announcement coincides with a new report by @CBItweets and @ECIU_UK showing the UK’s net zero economy added £105 billion in value in 2025 and now supports more than one million jobs 🤯
Responding to the latest Carbon Budget, our CEO Tara Singh (@RenewableUKCEO) said:
"Setting clear goals helps us to attract billions in private investment in the UK's world class clean tech industries, creating well-paid jobs throughout the country in wind, solar, energy storage and green hydrogen - our new powerhouses of economic growth.
“The clean power we generate cuts bills by pushing the most expensive gas generators off the system. Low-cost electricity from renewables protects billpayers from price shocks on volatile global fossil fuel markets which we can't control, strengthening the UK's energy security as we move closer towards energy independence".

The Chancellor has today unveiled plans to announce a range of reforms to accelerate critical energy schemes and better protect infrastructure projects from judicial review:
The headline proposal would allow Parliament to designate and approve the most important clean energy projects as being of ‘Critical National Importance’, reducing their exposure from judicial review on all but human rights grounds. A policy note has been published with further detail:
Responding to the announcement, our Executive Director of Policy and Engagement Ana Musat said:
“Soaring global oil and gas prices which we can’t control show why it’s essential for Britain to move much faster towards energy independence by building vital new wind farms and grid, to get power from where it’s generated to where it’s needed at the lowest cost for billpayers.
“It can take over ten years for a wind farm to go through the planning system, due in large part to repeated Judicial Reviews. Making JR processes proportionate will cut costs and unlock economic growth by providing a greater degree of confidence and certainty to investors. We would urge all stakeholders to engage meaningfully at the pre-application and application stages of new projects, to ensure that any concerns are raised early and can be considered and addressed in a timely way, rather than lodging legal challenges after projects have been given the go-ahead.
“Strengthening the UK’s energy security is a national priority, especially as demand is set to increase rapidly in the years ahead with the increasing electrification of transport and heating."

.@Orsted has today published its UK Supply Chain Map 2026, which shows it has signed major contracts with 2⃣5⃣5⃣ UK companies over the last five years! 🗺️
The latest map data shows that the largest proportion of Ørsted’s UK suppliers exporting outside the country are supplying services such as surveys, site investigations, operations & maintenance, design and engineering. Importantly, many of these companies got their start working on Ørsted's early UK wind farms before going global 🎉
Responding to the publication, our Deputy Chief Executive Jane Cooper said 🗣️
“This map shows that thanks to Ørsted’s excellent work in engaging with innovative offshore wind supply chain companies, it is creating jobs in all over the UK and especially in regions which need economic regeneration. Ørsted’s Hornsea 3 project is a great example of this, with 80 companies working on it.
“We have a great opportunity to expand further, as our Industrial Growth Plan shows how we can boost the UK’s economy by £25 billion between now and 2035 by focussing on manufacturing high-value components including more blades, towers, foundations and cables, as well as providing high-quality services, for offshore wind projects here and abroad. The supply chain companies fulfilling contracts for Ørsted are already boosting economic growth here and exporting their knowledge and expertise worldwide.”

Today the Energy Secretary announced a landmark decision to grant consent to 3⃣ major UK offshore wind farms, totalling up to four gigawatts of new clean power capacity🤯
Dogger Bank South East and Dogger Bank South West, off the north east coast of England, will each add 1.5GW of capacity, and are being developed by @RWE_AG and @Masdar. Alongside them, North Falls off the coast of Suffolk will add up to 1GW, and is being developed by @RWE_AG and @SSE.
Responding to this landmark news, our CEO Tara Singh @RenewableUKCEO) said:
“This is a milestone moment for the development of offshore wind in the UK. These projects will provide up to 4 gigawatts of new offshore wind capacity, equivalent to a quarter of the UK’s entire current offshore wind fleet. That’s enough to power over four million homes a year.
“These projects will draw in billions of pounds of private investment in vital new clean energy infrastructure and create hundreds of new jobs during their development, construction and operation, as well as fresh opportunities for UK supply chain companies. It’s also good news for hard-pressed billpayers, as every gigawatt of offshore wind we build pushes more expensive gas off our energy system”.
This morning, the King’s Speech set out details of a range of bills and draft bills, focussing on measures to bolster economic, energy, and national security:
A key aspect of this was the Energy Independence Bill, which will be introduced to Parliament in the near future and will give the Government additional power to accelerate the delivery of clean energy technologies and vital grid infrastructure.
Responding to the announcement, RenewableUK is recommending a number of key measures for inclusion in the Bill, with our Chief Executive Tara Singh (@RenewableUKCEO) saying:
“This Bill is a real opportunity to cut electricity bills and strengthen energy security by further lowering the cost of building renewables.
“That means removing avoidable delays in planning, changing the tax treatment of wind projects so that investment costs can be recovered earlier - reducing financing costs and the price power is sold at - and legislating for a national hydrogen network to unlock long duration energy storage.
“The prize of getting this right is cheaper, more secure energy built here in Britain, and less exposure to gas price shocks beyond our control.”

With the results of local elections across England coming in thick and fast, alongside national elections for both the Scottish Parliament and Welsh Senedd, we are already seeing many seats changing hands and a wide range of positions on clean energy being represented 🗳️
To discuss and digest the results, their implications for the renewables sector, and how the industry should respond, we will be hosting a post-election member breakfast next Tuesday 12 May from 8:30am to 10:00am at The Conduit in central London 🗓️
Our CEO Tara Singh (@RenewableUKCEO) will be joined by an expert panel to unpack the results of May's local and devolved elections and what they mean in practice for renewable developers. This will focus on three things 🔍
1️⃣ What the election results tell us about the direction of travel - where political resistance is growing, where support is holding, and how the balance between “build” and “benefit” is changing.
2️⃣ The implications for projects on the ground, especially planning risk, community expectations and delivery timelines.
3️⃣ How to engage effectively with the parties now shaping the debate: how to talk to Reform on cost and system value, to the Greens on community ownership and fairness, and to Plaid Cymru on local economic benefit and control.
The aim is practical: clearer messaging, better political instincts, and approaches that help projects secure consent and support in a more contested environment.
