Illinois House (33rd Dist.) • Assistant Majority Leader • Chairman Labor & Commerce Committee • #southside Chicago & South Cook • President Emeritus of @NCSLorg
As the 2026 National Conference of State Legislatures Summit comes to a close, I was honored to pass the gavel to Senator Barry Usher as he begins his term as President of the @NCSLorg
One of the greatest strengths of NCSL is its commitment to bringing together leaders from every state, territory, and political perspective. As a proud Democrat from Illinois, it was especially meaningful to pass the gavel to a Republican from Montana—a reminder that our nation is strongest when we work together across party lines in service to the people we represent.
Thank you to Speaker Welch, President Harmon, my Illinois General Assembly colleagues and staff for warmly welcoming our friends from across the nation and around the world to Chicago. Your hospitality helped make this Summit a tremendous success.
My last message as President is clear: 𝗪𝗘 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗪𝗘 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 — 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮.
It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve as NCSL President. I look forward to seeing everyone in Atlanta, Georgia for the 2027 NCSL Summit!
As Chairman of the Illinois House Labor & Commerce Committee, I’m proud to stand with working families across our state.
Labor Day is not only a celebration of the contributions of workers, but also a reminder of the ongoing fight for fairness, dignity, and opportunity for all. Illinois State AFL-CIO + Chicago Federation of Labor
A. Philip Randolph once said, “Freedom is never given; it is won.” That truth still guides our work today as we continue building stronger protections, better wages, and safer workplaces for every Illinoisan.
Today, let’s honor the labor movement’s past victories and recommit ourselves to the work still ahead.

Today, I had the honor of joining 10th Ward Alderman Peter Chico, CFL President Bob Reiter and many representatives from Illinois’ great labor unions for the 2026 Chicago Federation of Labor’s 𝗟𝗔𝗕𝗢𝗥 𝗗𝗔𝗬 Parade in my community on the Southeast Side of Chicago. @chicagolabor
Celebrate the hardworking men and women who help keep our city, state, and nation running. The wonderful Grand Marshall for this year was SEIU President April Verrett.
Thank you to everyone who came out, marched, and continues to fight for working families across Illinois.
What happened at South Chicago Chapel was unacceptable. Every family deserves to know that their loved one will be treated with dignity, respect, and care.
Our community spoke up, action was taken, and now we have a responsibility to make sure something like this never happens again.
State Representative Marcus C. Evans, Jr. told WTTW, public trust has to be our priority. That means bringing families, funeral professionals, regulators, and lawmakers to the table, examining where our oversight failed, and making thoughtful changes that strengthen accountability and protect Illinois families.
We will do the work — and we will get it right.

Walking through Dublin and Belfast earlier this month as President Emeritus of the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) with my legislative colleagues from across the nation was an incredible experience. 🇮🇪🇺🇸
As government leaders, we have a responsibility to work together, build bridges, and find common ground—even when we come from different communities, backgrounds, or perspectives. This visit was a powerful reminder that meaningful progress is possible when leaders listen to one another, strengthen relationships, and remain committed to collaboration in service to the people we represent.
Some of the sites we visited included the Belfast Peace Walls and Clonard Monastery, and the City Life Center.
During our visit to the Irish Parliament in Dublin, we greatly appreciated Minister Helen McEntee taking time out of her schedule to meet with us. We also had the privilege of meeting members of the Northern Ireland Assembly and touring the historic Hillsborough Castle, where the royal family stays during visits to Northern Ireland.
A special thank you to former Stormont legislator Monica McWilliams for sharing her powerful reflections on signing the Good Friday Agreement.
Finally, a heartfelt thank you to Mark Daly, Irish Senate President, and Daryl Barron, Lord Mayor of Dublin, along with the Northern Ireland Assembly, for welcoming our NCSL delegation with such gracious hospitality!
Questions remain about possible gaps in state oversight nearly a month after an investigation turned up 56 decomposing bodies at the South Chicago Chapel funeral home.
Industry leaders and lawmakers are looking at what needs to change. https://t.co/leLa4EFcx8

As Chairman of the Labor committee in the Illinois House, I reached out to @ILAFLCIO President Drea and Secretary-Treasurer Devaney to help me learn and connect with my labor friends in 𝓢𝓸𝓾𝓽𝓱𝓮𝓻𝓷 𝓘𝓵𝓵𝓲𝓷𝓸𝓲𝓼.
So last week I hit the road south to connect with Joanna Webb-Gauvin, Director of Political & Legislative Affairs for @AFSCME@afscme31 and southern Illinois AFSCME workers.
The discussion was both informative and insightful, providing me with a greater understanding of the important work being performed by the dedicated state employees. Their commitment to serving and supporting their patients was evident throughout our conversation and is a testament to the professionalism and compassion they bring to their work every day. “𝓡𝓾𝓷 𝔀𝓲𝓽𝓱 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓡𝓮𝓹”
Next stop on the tour was @IBEW International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 702 headquarters in West Frankfort, Illinois. I appreciated the opportunity to share a meal with members of the Local 702 Executive Board and learn more about their work and commitment to the labor movement.
I had the opportunity to tour the IBEW Training Center and gain a firsthand understanding of the comprehensive training and preparation provided to the next generation of skilled trades professionals. The dedication to workforce development and apprenticeship opportunities was truly impressive.
I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to Steve Hughart, Business Manager of IBEW Local 702, for welcoming us and opening the Local’s doors to provide us with an informative look at their training center. I also want to thank Tate Wright, Business Representative, for serving as our guide and sharing his knowledge and insights throughout the tour.

Check out and support this amazing establishment that offers high quality and unique pastry items. It’s an experience!!!!
The owner Maya Camille Broussard is a phenomenal chef and woman to be celebrated 💎🌸🍰🥧
Pres. Drea and ST Devaney joined @Repevans33 and members of @afscme31 to tour the Choate Mental Health and Developmental Center last week. Choate is a vital employer and an essential part of IL’s continuum of care. Sign the petition to keep Choate working! https://t.co/MBLfffw2Sn
It was an incredible turnout at our 10th Ward Community Shredding & Electronics Recycling event with Alderman Peter Chico & the great 10th Ward Staff at the Hegewisch Business Association.
Thanks Hegewisch Business Association, President Ken Miotk, Jr. + Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart & his team + Midway Moving & Storage
Thank you to all the residents who came out to protect their privacy and keep our neighborhood green.
We look forward to seeing you at the next community event!
This morning, I had an incredible time joining the Chicago Vocational Career Academy (CVS) Alumni Association and our dedicated community members for their Annual Prayer Walk.
We walked the perimeter of CVS, making 8 intentional stops to lift up our school community in prayer—covering all Chicagoland students, teachers, staff, leadership, and neighbors for protection, peace, guidance, and academic excellence this school year.
A heartfelt thank you to CVS Alumni Association, Inc. President Harold Williams and CVS Principal, Dr. LaTasha Taylor, for organizing this powerful morning and welcoming me to be a part of it.
Today on @NewsNation State Rep. Marcus C. Evans, Jr. spoke about his active work alongside the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulations (IDFPR) and the Comptrollers office to ensure the owners of Southside Chapel are fully held accountable—and to put improved protections in place so a tragedy like this never happens again.
He is praying for the families who were taken advantage of by these disgraceful funeral operators. Thank you to Journalist, Laura Ingle and NewsNation Staff for the interview.

“The discovery of human remains at the South Chicago Chapel funeral home in my community is deeply disturbing and heartbreaking. My thoughts and prayers are with the families who are forced to endure this traumatic situation.
I am working closely with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, the Illinois Comptroller’s Office, my legislative colleagues, and 10th Ward Alderman Peter Chico to determine an appropriate path forward.
I appreciate actions taking by IDFPR and the comptroller's office to hold these bad actors accountable and protect the public.
I will do everything within my power to support the affected families and pursue possible legislative solutions. I am committed to fighting for greater accountability, stronger safeguards, and a lasting solution.”

Proud to earn a 100% rating on the 2026 Illinois Environmental Council (IEC) Environmental Scorecard.
Protecting Illinois’ natural resources while advocating for policies that strengthen our communities, support working families, and create a healthier future for generations to come is a top priority for me. ♻️☀️⚡️💨🌲
A 100% score from the IEC reflects a strong commitment to clean air, clean water, conservation, and environmental sustainability.
Here is a look at a few key votes I was proud to cast this session:
▪️ Clean & Reliable Grid Affordability (CRGA) Act (SB25): I voted YES to strengthen grid reliability and affordability, helping save Illinois residents an estimated $13.4 billion in energy costs over the next 20 years.
▪️ Northern Illinois Transit Authority Act (SB2111): I voted YES to establish the NITA—replacing the RTA to unify CTA, Metra, and Pace for a more seamless, reliable, and accessible public transit system.
▪️ PFAS Task Force (HB2955): I voted YES to create a dedicated committee focused on developing and updating an action plan to protect our wastewater and safeguard our communities from harmful forever chemicals.
Thank you to the Illinois Environmental Council and to the residents of the 33rd District for your continued partnership as we work together toward a stronger, healthier, and more sustainable Illinois for all.
