In today’s Gospel, Jesus stands before the tomb of His friend Lazarus. He weeps with those who mourn. He shares in their grief. And then He reveals His power over death itself.

Before the miracle, He asks Martha a question that echoes through every generation: “Do you believe this?”

Faith does not deny sorrow. It does not pretend loss is easy. But it trusts that Christ is stronger than the grave, and that His voice still calls us from darkness into life.

🙏 Lord, strengthen our faith in moments of doubt and remind us that in You, death never has the final word.

🎥 The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Washington, DC, United States 🇺🇸

It is the largest Catholic church in North America and one of the ten largest churches in the world.

Architecture: The basilica features a unique Byzantine-Romanesque Revival style, constructed entirely of masonry without steel beams.  It stands 237 feet tall to the top of its dome and spans 459 feet in length, with a total interior area of over 206,000 square feet. 

Chapels & Art: It houses 82 Marian chapels representing diverse cultures and nationalities, reflecting the multicultural fabric of American Catholics.  The basilica contains the world’s largest collection of contemporary ecclesiastical art, including vast mosaics, stained glass, and sculptures. 

Key Features: The Trinity Dome—completed in 2017—features a monumental mosaic of the Holy Trinity, Mary as Theotokos, and the Nicene Creed.  The Great Upper Church can seat 10,000 worshippers, and the Crypt Church includes a museum with papal artifacts like Pope Paul VI’s Coronation Tiara and a Golden Rose bestowed by Pope Benedict XVI.

History: Construction began in 1920 under Bishop Thomas J. Shahan and was resumed after WWII, culminating in the dedication of the Upper Church in 1959.  It was elevated to Minor Basilica status by Pope John Paul II in 1990.
