विमान के पायलट सुमित सुब्बरवाल ने आखिरी मौके पर मे-डे (May day) कॉल दिया था। यह एक अंतरराष्ट्रीय आपातकालीन कॉल है, जिसे पायलट उस स्थिति में भेजता है जब विमान गंभीर संकट में हो और उसे इमरजेंसी हेल्प की जरूरत हो।

Mayday शब्द की उत्पत्ति फ्रेंच शब्द "m’aidez" से हुई है, जिसका अर्थ होता है "मदद कीजिए (Help me)"।

इसे तीन बार दोहराया जाता है — "Mayday Mayday Mayday"
