As we celebrate today the 250th anniversary of the Continental Congress voting for American independence, I hope we are all inspired by what it means to be an American.

26 years ago on this day, I came to this country with nothing - just one suitcase and a lot of inspiration - I wanted to be here for the 4th of July celebrations. Through hard work, determination, and the support of so many grassroots Americans, I was blessed with the opportunity - and the responsibility - to become a Representative of the people in one of the most powerful institutions in the world.

My story, like so many others, is proof that the American Dream is still alive - but we must remain vigilant to preserve it. We should never forget the principles of individual freedom, God-given natural rights, and self-government that have made our nation great. May God bless our Republic!!
