This article addresses an important question:

How does financial scarcity impact productivity at work?

On the one hand, one might think that financial scarcity could increase motivation, potentially leading to a rise in productivity.

On the other hand, one might think that financial scarcity could increase anxiety, which could result in a lack of focus and, therefore, a decrease in productivity.

This study randomizes the payment of extremely poor workers in India to test the causal effect of financial scarcity on productivity in a job that requires planning and focus.

The results show that financial scarcity causes a decrease in productivity, partly due to a reduced capacity for planning and a lack of focus.

This article highlights an important reason why escaping the poverty trap may be difficult: poverty reduces the ability to plan for the long term and diminishes focus.

This article also prompts us to reflect on the social consequences of poverty: reducing poverty can lead to social benefits, in the form of increased productivity.

People perform better when they don’t have to worry about how to pay their bills.
