ICRE 2023 Calls for Submissions is now open! Call for pre-conference courses and in-conference workshops - Deadline for submission: November 18, 2022. Call for abstracts - Deadline for submission: January 6, 2023.
Some ideas from other industries:
- when giving someone else instructions, get them to repeat it back to you
- decrease time pressure for critical decision making (if possible)
- slow down, self pace workload
- rotate tasks
- talking to each other whilst doing repetitive tasks
- if you phone someone on call at night, recognize that they have likely just woken up. Chat for 30s, a minute until their sleep inertia has worn off before presenting the case
- if you’ve been woken up in the night for call, say that you’ve just woken up. Ask them to repeat.
So how much sleep do you need at a minimum in health care to minimize risk of fatigue-related accidents?
- 5hrs sleep in the prior 24hrs
- 12hrs in the prior 48hrs
#ICRE2022
How do we measure fatigue risk?
- identifying sleep opportunity (how many hours off)
- sleep wake behaviour (how much sleep have you had in prior 24 and 48hrs)
- how fatigued do you feel (use a validated scale like the Karolinska sleepiness scale)

Drew Dawson: managing fatigue is not about changing schedules/rotations. It’s not about reducing fatigue. It’s about identifying risk and developing strategies in your program to manage different levels of fatigue. #icre2022
If you missed Drew’s session yesterday, you can catch him again on Friday at 3.15pm in Room 513ef for his session on how to create a local fatigue risk management plan @ICREConf#icre2022
A good fatigue risk management system will measure five levels of fatigue:
1. Sleep opportunity
2. Sleep wake behaviour
3. Fatigued behaviour
4. Fatigued errors
5. Fatigued incidents

Tomorrow at 10:30am @sarahglaze @academialiya and Amy Robinson share findings from implementing fatigue risk management in their residency programs @ICREConf PA Pre-Con. Don't miss it!
