Breaking: Rooted in Resistance Members took our the resistance to streets to draw our attention to the public outcry for an oil free economy, economic freedom and the halt for further oil infrastructure development in Uganda.

The call for our non-violent demonstration comes at a time when Uganda is preparing for first oil but this must not come at an expense of suppresing critical voices speaking up boldly for what matters most at a time when the country must all join forces as one voice speaking up for future generations.

Unfortunately, police and security forces blocked the marches and arrested over a dozen of our members at @Parliament_Ug and at @TotalEnergies head quarters in Uganda from over 500 demonstrators that took part in the action today. We demand their unconditional release and call upon the Ugandan government to restraint from further using a lethal force against peaceful protesters amidst a societal, climate and economic collapse in Uganda.

UPDATE: Police have arrested another group of youths from Rooted in Resistance after they attempted to march to Parliament to deliver a petition calling for reforms in petroleum policies and investment priorities. The arrests follow a similar unsuccessful attempt on August 10, which led to the arrest of four youths. In their petition, the youth are calling on Parliament to also redirect national resources towards productive sectors capable of generating sustainable and widely shared wealth.

Buganda Road Chief Magistrate's Court has remanded four youths from Rooted in Resistance until September 4, 2026, over charges of public nuisance. The four were arrested on August 10, 2026, while marching to Parliament to submit a petition concerning Uganda’s oil sector. Their lawyer, Peter Arinaitwe, called for a fair hearing of the case. The accused are Aniwallh Ssembalirwa, Hassan Mugoya, Aron Patrick Ariong and Ivan Okanya.

Court Update: Our resistance continued in court today following the ongoing court trial for four of our members who appeared before Magistrate Achayo as our legal team attempted to secure the release of these brave activists on bail. However the magistrate further adjourned the matter to 4th September thus remanding them again to Luziira Maximum Security Prisons prolonging their detention to 25 days so far since their arrest on 10th August for participating in a non violent protest march we organized to @Parliament_Ug to demand an oil free economy, economic freedom and halt to further oil infrastructure development in Uganda.

Prior to the adjournment, the magistrate made harsh statements against the four accused persons stating that she would be harsh during the court proceedings as she noted in her remarks that she warned our legal team that a case of the same nature of people protesting against oil that she will handle it under harsh conditions because that they have had same previous court cases with reference to the most recent incident in which she presided over the conviction and sentencing of 8 of our members to 11 months in Jail.

Rooted in Resistance condemns in the strongest terms possible the said harsh remarks by the magistrate who is expected to be impartial while administering justice or presiding over any court matter brought before her.

We salute the brave four who are enduring jail under a very repressive judicial environment and may history be just to them for refusing to stand by and watch amidst a social, climate and economic collapse in the country.

Court Update: Tomorrow we take our resistance to court as four of our members will appear before Magistrate Achayo at Buganda Road Court as our legal team tirelessly work to ensure their unconditional release.

The four were arrested from a large group of our members on 10th August as we marched to @Parliament_Ug to demand an oil free economy, economic freedom and demand a halt to further oil infrastructure development in Uganda.

At a time when the judiciary is being used as a weapon to silence our members from further resisting oil projects benefiting a handful of individuals at the expense of ordinary citizens, we salute the brave four members that have endured over 17 days in detention at Luziira Maximum Security Prisons for refusing to stand by and watch amidst a social, climate and economic collapse in the country.

5 Kyambogo, Makerere students arrested over Parliament march

Police have arrested five students from Kyambogo and Makerere universities for allegedly attempting to march to Parliament.

The students, under the umbrella group, Rooted in Resistance, were reportedly protesting against oil development and calling for an oil-free economy and an end to the expansion of oil infrastructure in Uganda.

The arrests came as the students attempted to take their protest to Parliament, where they intended to present their concerns over the country’s oil projects and their potential environmental and social impact.
