Authoritarian regimes struggle over long time frames because they will sometimes put a leader in charge that has terrible ideas and as long as they aren't opposed by the military, they will retain power. And sometimes those bad leaders hold power for decades.
The magic of democracies is that while you do get some dumb ideas that get put into practice because they have popular support, you are screened from really bad ideas (like the one below) because enough people can see how they are bad.
Political extremism on both sides is bad, but the reason I tend to zero in on the far left is because it’s hijacked everything I’ve ever loved—literature, art, music—and has convinced almost the entire world that the value of art lies in its relation to social justice.
