A burial society typically consists of members of a community who contribute a monthly fee. It is governed by a constitution and there are rules as to how many family members can be covered and how much can be paid out.
Banks such as ABSA, Centenary through their Bancassurance have also introduced these types of service offerings with even some targeting the Ugandan diaspora community.
Insurance companies in Uganda such as ICEA Lion, UAP, Liberty and Prudential have developed funeral cover packages which are tailor made for individuals, groups, SMEs and even families.

It has been quoted that the costs of some funeral services are between 8 million-12 million UGX for upper-middle-class Ugandans and for the wealthy, it can go between 80 million-100 million UGX.

People take long to congregate and therefore they ought to preserve the bodies of their loved ones in a funeral home. Community solidarity where people used to gather and light fire for weeks is slowly and gradually giving way.
Another factor is the human great affection between the living and the dead which compels the living to give a flamboyant send-off to their dear beloved dead ones. Funeral service companies have come up with a lot of innovations to fill that gap.
These are pastoralists who used to bury their dead in cow dung and leave the place as soon as possible for a more secure place. As fate would have it, they have now built permanent residencies and they use funeral service companies to bury for them there dead.
One of the factors that have led to the growth of the funeral service business is the emergency of a sizeable middle class which looks at the service as a necessity despite some sections of the society calling it extravagance/show off.
