Seeing "is xyz art or not" debates on my timeline again and it's so frustrating. Every debate like this, be it about video games, AI, coding, whatever, is actually the same debate and the only question at hand is, what is art? And people have never been able to agree on that!
@kyomu_utsuro I have two points to make.
1. Bad/low effort content succeeds all the time. Like reality TV for instance. Or soap operas.
2. "Slop" isn't exactly meant to convey low quality, moreso that it's unoriginal, dime-a-dozen, etc. People don't want everything to look the same.
@RealMatthewBall I guess I can believe that an effected artist would be coping like that. Anyway, supporting AI art is an embarrassing waste of your time and I think you should stop. Have a good day.
@SanicBushpig Idk what the consensus is on Enk right now. I don't think he's top tier but I don't see the case for him being a "bad" character anymore.
@ArturoWolff1 This doesn't seem relevant but sure you can translate artistic knowledge to AI. What I'm saying is your artistic knowledge is not special, and having knowledge isn't skill. Anyone could just learn the knowledge and start making the same AI art with very little practice.
@ArturoWolff1 To put it another way. If I see a beautiful sculpture of a dog and I think "I want a sculpture like that, but of a cat" but I'm not a sculptor, then I need to ask the sculptor to make it for me. If I have an idea for AI art, I have no reason not to just make it myself.
@ArturoWolff1 Anyone can make any style in theory I just meant using AI is very easy and you don't really need to build up separate skills to do it like drawing, you basically just need to be able to type basic sentences. Drawing realistically requires a ton of practice.
@ArturoWolff1 Well let me repeat I do think AI art is art. But it's an art style that almost anyone can make. We all have thoughts and feelings we want to express. Very few people have ideas so profound, so interesting that the sheer thought of it is going to impress people.
@ArturoWolff1 To summarize my stance, I will concede that AI art is art but I don't think the person providing prompts to an AI deserves the same level of credit as an artist in a traditional medium.
@ArturoWolff1 Of course. I'm not even trying to claim AI art isn't art. I just thought the director analogy was interesting because if you cosign the idea that you're basically in collaboration with another creator, that's honestly a much more defensible position.
This is an annoying semantic arguements where people won't admit "AI is art" because it feels wrong but technically it is art. It's just shitty art. Shitty art is still art. Instead of dying on the hill of "is it art" just concede that it's art and tell them it fucking sucks.
"AI is a medium, like a pencil, an instrument, or a camera. The artist is the creator, the medium is a tool."
The logic here is totally sound. Any line you draw between artist and tool would be arbitrary. So why can we all just tell that AI artists are pathetic and stupid? 1/?
But what if you knew that you too *could* easily reproduce a piece of art? You wouldn't be as interested. That's the problem with AI art. The only talent you need is an imagination and the ability to write basic sentences. And no your imagination and your ideas are not special.
@ArturoWolff1 That is common parlance but no one is actually under the impression that a director is the only person who gets credit for a movie. There are credits at the end of movies with everyone involved.
