Reading is only one step in combatting racism but it's a step many still need to take. Here are some books that helped me get more proximate to the lived experiences of Black people—and the terrible impact of anti-Black racism. Fiction/poetry on the left. Nonfiction on the right.
Suggestions for NEW TEACHERS starting your careers during a pandemic:
Measure yourself exclusively against your own best effort to serve your kids.
Prioritize self care.
Keep a journal.
Keep your eyes open
be humble + curious
seek to learn + grow.
It’s healthy to cry.
Lots of policing kids behaviors coming across the timeline, so I offer this: as we rethink schools, consider transforming the traditional roles of power and positionality. Students are not coming to schools, but rather we are guests in their homes. How should we act accordingly?
