Every morning before turning on my laptop and signing in for the workday, I close my eyes, take a deep breath, count my blessings, and remind myself why I believe in what we are all building.
I’ll never forget the day one when of the biggest banks in Yugoslavia, one my father happened to work for, imploded. After decades of socialism followed by war and sanctions, this was the final blow. Months of wages he was owed, gone. Our family savings - pragmatically stored in $deutschmarks instead of $dinars because of hyperinflation that did numbers the Venezuelan bolivar can only dream of - also gone. Just like that. I was young, but old enough to understand what was going on. With my eyes full of tears, I looked up at my father and cried “Dad, how are we going to get out of this mess?”
“Son”, he said “ *we* will not. I don’t have that dog in me anymore - I am old and jaded, my bones are weary from all the fighting, and our system is oppressive and fucked beyond repair. But *you* will have a chance. One day, you will go to America, the land of freedom, opportunity, and innovation. With God’s grace, there will be a new system that will be open, free, and trustless - and hopefully you will be able to permissionlessly trade long-tail imaginary assets with 50x leverage, and you might make all of this back in one fucking trade”.
