the 20% your bank keeps on money sent abroad to invest is an advance on your own income tax, and it shows up in form 26AS before it comes back. https://t.co/7gb9aMiWm3
the first five months of the year already add up to about $1.73 billion sent abroad to invest, and every rupee above ₹10 lakh a year still carries 20% TCS. the month-by-month table: https://t.co/I0OCfpMlhE
Indians are sending more money abroad for one reason: to invest.
RBI's October bulletin has the August LRS numbers. Remittances for investing in overseas equity and debt were $321.5 million, up 111% from $152.2 million a year ago. At RBI's reference rate of ₹95.56 to the dollar, that is about ₹3,073 crore in one month.
To compare that with something
familiar: SIP inflows into Indian mutual funds were ₹32,297 crore in August. So for every ₹10 that went into SIPs, about ₹1 left the country to be invested abroad. A year ago it was closer to 50 paise.
Nothing else Indians send abroad grew like this. Travel, the biggest head, was $1.63 billion, the same as last August. Gifts, deposits, property and money for relatives barely moved. Take out investments, and LRS outflows fell 3%.
This happened while sending money abroad has become more expensive.
Remittances above ₹10 lakh a year attract 20% TCS, and the rupee is past 95. Neither has slowed it.
August was not even the peak. June saw $456.7 million. Last financial year, Indians sent $2.65 billion abroad to invest. April to August this year is already at $1.73 billion.

@SindhuHarih@businessline with april to july added, investment remittances reach about $1.73 billion in the first five months, 2.1 times the $823 million of the same months in 2025.
@growth_edge_ two funds with the same return can also charge very different fees, and AMFI publishes every scheme's TER, regular and direct, on its website.
@Finance_Bareek tax splits them too. NRE and FCNR(B) interest is exempt in india, while NRO interest is taxed, with TDS at 30% plus surcharge and cess.
@ActusDei april to july was already $1,403.53 million by the same RBI tables, 2.1 times 2025, so with august the first five months come to about $1.73 billion.
indians sent $1.4 billion abroad to invest in shares and debt from april to july, 2.1 times last year's pace, and every rupee above ₹10 lakh a year still carries 20% TCS. https://t.co/I0OCfpMlhE
@moneycontrolcom the minutes out this week point the same way. four of six members voted for "calibrated tightening", which the minutes say takes cuts off the table near term.
compound today: the rules, rates and data releases that matter if you have ₹50 lakh to ₹25 crore invested. two lines each, official source linked.
this week: gold bonds redeemed early are now taxed, and listed bonds get a sebi credit meter from 21 nov.

@moneycontrolcom a rising 10-year yield shows up as lower NAVs on long-duration debt funds, and units bought since 1 april 2023 are taxed at slab on the way out anyway.
@moneycontrolcom the tax side changed too. under the new tax regime, a donation to a charity gets no deduction, and only the old regime still allows one.

@moneycontrolcom whichever way it goes, the tax on the way out depends on the route. a gold ETF held over 12 months pays 12.5% on the gain, and a gold bond bought on the exchange is now taxed even at maturity.
@FI_InvestIndia for anyone parking it in an FD, RBI's rules make premature withdrawal compulsory only on an individual's deposits of ₹1 crore and below.
@CNBCTV18Live@anshul91_m since 1 april 2023, hallmarked gold jewellery has to carry a six-character HUID, and the BIS Care app shows what it was certified as before you pay.
a single FD of ₹3 crore or more is a bulk deposit, and since 1 october every bank has to publish its bulk rates by 10:10 am and pay exactly those. https://t.co/KkDzW5RLi0
