The businessmen love Sari's ideas and praise her hard, but it's Gio's proud smile toward her that has Martin frowning.
Why is his brother smiling at her like he knows her that well? Like they spent time together and are already so close?
Sino ba ito para gumanyan na kay Sari?
And it's not just that. When the businessmen are gone, Gio decides to treat them to dinner after a successful venture, saying that she deserves it for how savvy she was during the sales pitch. Oo nga naman. Magaling naman ito.
But they laugh a little too hard. Tease each other with a coziness that he tells himself doesn't bother him, except his muscles wind a little bit tighter. His gaze also follows her movements too much, from the way her curls turn frazzled to the way her liptint smudges slightly.
By the time dinner's done, Martin's two steps away from exploding. Or slumping.
Or nudging his own brother aside for making her laugh. Again.
"Sari, let's go home," he blurts out, having had enough of this.
He takes out his car keys. Realizes she's not following.
When he looks back, she shakes her head.
"Ihahatid po ako ni sir Gio."
Gio. Gio, Gio, Gio.
"Actually, I'm rethinking it," Gio says, eyeing them both. "How about staying with us for the night and going home in the morning? Gabi na, eh."
"Ha? Pero si lolo..."
"I'll have someone send him a message. Or maybe you can text him," Martin finds himself piping in. "Bukas ka na umuwi."
"Pero san ako matutulog?" she asks.
Gio darts a glance at him. Smirks. "Ako na bahala since I owe you a favor. Free yung room sa tabi ng room ko—"
"Yun na lang sa tabi ng room ni Trixie. Malapit lang sakin," Martin cuts in, voice on edge.
Gio's smirk widens. But Sari doesn't notice, already too busy calling her lolo and reassuring that it will only be for one night. She's safe, she insists. Trixie will be in the room next door, she promises.
"Tsaka ang bait po ni sir Gio. He'll take care of my ride home bukas, lo."
Gio. Gio, Gio, Gio.
By the time they return to the hotel area, Martin is one step away from...something. He directs her to her guestroom in silence. Hands her some amenities and Trixie's sleepwear.
Seethes.
"Thank you po sa damit—"
"Si Gio lang ba ang mabait sayo? Ang pwedeng mag-alaga sayo?"
Sari looks up. "Ha? What...oh. Di naman sa ganon."
"So ano?"
"Sir Gio is not my boss. He's my friend. Gio na nga tawag ko minsan."
"Eh ako?" he demands.
She meets his gaze. Swallows. "Boss. Professional. May boundaries. Like you asked."
I'm sorry, he wants to say.
Lecheng boundaries na yan, he wants to shout.
Instead, his thumb moves. Brushes the liptint off the corner of her lips, tucks a wayward strand of hair in.
Lingers to cup her face just for a second or two.
Then he steps back because she's right. Boundaries dapat.
And maybe those boundaries are needed for Martin to remain his old self instead of this person slowly going crazy over a yearning he can't understand yet.
"Sige. Goodnight."
He walks away before he can do something else.
Something forbidden.
THE FATE OF MARTSARI
"Sir, ready na po ang lahat."
"Thank you, Sari."
Martin waits for the side comments: about the weather, about what a great day it is, about what excites his assistant the most on that particular moment. But he only gets silence. He remembers last night's conversation and how he asked for just one thing: boundaries.
He opens his mouth, caught off guard that he's getting it now. Too fast. But she's already walking away.
During the rest of the day, she goes about her task ensuring everything's catered for everyone. Breakfast, hot showers. An exercise activity to get them energized after. She smiles at the group, giggles at Cheska's jokes. Laughs really hard at Gio's joke. Sunshine at its finest, really.
Except that sun doesn't shine on him anymore.
When the day is over and it's time to leave, she organizes that, too. So he steps forward, tugging the clipboard out of her hand. She looks up in surprise, her smile ready.
That smile dies when Sari realizes it's him.
"Sir?"
"Ako na," he says, voice suddenly gruff. Bakit parang hindi sya makahinga? "Magpahinga ka na."
She purses her lips. Tugs the clipboard back. "Trabaho ko to."
"Ako na."
"Tapusin ko lang trabaho ko, sir."
"You need rest—"
"Uy, Sari! Tara na, sabay ka na samin!" Kiko shouts while Cheska waves her over. "Tama na yan. Uwi na tayo!"
Sari waves back. She nods at Martin. "Okay na to, sir. Tapos na. Sakay ka na rin sa kabilang sasakyan."
She turns around and runs toward the other car—but not before he catches the smile he directs toward his brother. And Cheska.
Bakit parang naninikip ang dibdib nya?
Martin tells himself he doesn't care.
But something close to dread settles in his stomach when he realizes that maybe he does.
