Research Social Scientist with @USGS at @USGSWILDLIFE. Views my own.
Cultural evolution. Biocultural conservation. Social good. Data science. Dad.

Great to have the hard work from our applied working group go out into the world and hope it can serve as a starting point for building applied tools for #conservation. Huge thanks to all our dedicated members and to @CulturalEvolSoc@CultEvolFunding
Culture shapes conservation.

And now @NavyFederal expects full, immediate repayment when Interior employees have only received 50% of their back pay? With less than a day's notice?
I expect this to cause huge problems for a lot of people.
When the government shutdown began, Navy Federal had one objective: to help members through the event with minimal impact to their lives and credit. We're proud to have supported members impacted by the shutdown with more than 195,000 zero-interest loans totaling over $350 million, with zero impact to their credit history.
An excellent and necessary piece on the need for transformative change to support Indigenous Knowledges and governance, led by @FeelingFisky w/ important contributions from @Scholar_Melinda, @lilyvaneeden, and all other collabs. Thanks to @CultEvolFunding for support of this work
🚨 yay, another collaborative research paper in “People and Nature”. Add to your classes in natural resource management/ environmental science 🪶🌿🔥#wildfire#goodfire#science@PaN_BES
Hey folks,
The Applied Cultural Evolution (ACE) Laboratory (https://t.co/LTrMZd1f9b) at the University of Maine is seeking applicants for 2 funded doctoral research assistantships focused on applied aspects of human cultural evolution. 1/4
Loved seeing how @NiftyFoxCreativ captured our project at @CultEvolFunding capstone. @rewberl has done an amazing job both conceptualising this applied project from the beginning and herding us cats along the way. Conservation is cultural! #consocsci
Tomorrow night: I get to chat with Robin Berl, the writer and director of Dua: The Monster’s Story, at @PrometheusDC
Sadly, I can’t be there in person, but so excited to talk Medusa adaptations remotely. If you are in the DC area, you can buy tickets at https://t.co/A9iR8TZAv7
It’s official — wolverines are making their comeback to Colorado.
This evening, Governor Jared Polis signed Bill SB24-171 into law, giving us, at Colorado Parks & Wildlife, authority to reintroduce the North American wolverine to Colorado. Wolverines are a CO native species.
Thanks to @CultEvolFunding for funding our working group and to @wildlifesociety for inviting this and other pieces that help to open up the field to perspectives beyond those of the traditional institution
Very glad to see this paper out, helping to frame the need for transformational change in our governance institutions to implement Indigenous Knowledges and practices into effective mgmt for all. Led by the indefatigable @FeelingFisky, with help from @Scholar_Melinda and others
New paper out from one of our funded Applied Working Groups, led by @rewberl, exploring how Indigenous knowledge can change the cultural practices of agencies that govern natural resource management for the better. Read the (open access!) paper here: https://t.co/iWHXrZME4d
Brilliant to see BISoN now roaming out in the wild! 🦬 BISoN is a fully Bayesian approach to social network analysis that captures and propagates uncertainty through the entire stats workflow: https://t.co/CfEKcjdWiU
We're giving away money to researchers who want to use the Database of Religious History (DRH) data to answer questions in cultural evolution, historical psychology, and more. Details below.

All knowledge (science) is culturally-situated. Western-trained scientists who ignore this in favor of imperialism and a false sense of objectivity are at risk of misinterpreting data and causing harm.
This rhetoric is embarrassing, so inaccurate as to be absurdist, and harmful
The conservation community & @AMNH community mourn the untimely loss of Dr. Eleanor Sterling. A brilliant & creative mind, a tireless & visionary collaborator, a champion for equity & inclusion, and a devoted mentor, colleague, and friend, she will continue to inspire us, always.
@nerdpro Interestingly, I think this is one of the few instances where larger sample size is less trustworthy! Esp. in recent years, if a product has a huge number of near-unanimous positive ratings, odds are that it's sellers manipulating algorithms with bots and/or paid reviews
My favorite story is when my dad went back to school in his 50s to get a degree so if he wrote a history of his nation it would be taken seriously and while there the archeology department invited him to a dig on his own rez.
