#Ethiopia: #Tigray students excel in national university exams, overcoming war and displacement

Yonas Nugus and Helen Berhe, both from Ethiopia's Tigray region, achieved top scores on the national university entrance exam despite years of war and disruption. Yonas earned 675 out of 700, the highest score nationwide for the 2022-23 academic year, while Helen led among female students with a score of 662.

The COVID-19 pandemic initially disrupted education in Tigray, and the situation worsened with the outbreak of war in November 2020. The war brought widespread destruction and loss. Schools were closed, and many, including Yonas and Helen, were forced to flee with their families. “The situation seemed hopeless and never-ending,” Yonas said.

However, he and Helen did not give up their educational dreams. Helen recounted the tragic impact of the war, saying, "During the war, a smart student with us committed suicide when they entered her area and raped her."

With the cessation of hostilities in November 2022, students returned to rebuild their lives and education. “We had to finish a year’s education in just four months,” said Helen, describing the challenge of catching up. Despite the irregular schooling, both students excelled, with Helen noting the experience taught her resilience and purpose.
