of course it is ALWAYS our Indigenous communities that suffer first and hardest because of our lack of attention to climate change. This is utterly devastating and we cannot continue to keep allowing this to happen.

The Liberal government continues to try to convince us that they respect the rights of First Nations, including our rights to Free, Prior and Informed Consent. But this has not been demonstrated in their actions. The Liberals have been identifying projects of "national interest" BEFORE meaningful consultation with Indigenous peoples. Consultation after the fact does not uphold the principles of Free, Prior and Informed Consent as enshrined in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, nor Canada’s constitutional obligations.
Parliament adopted the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act in 2021 to ensure that Canadian laws align with the minimum standards affirmed in UNDRIP. Yet identifying projects as being in the “national interest” before Indigenous nations have had the opportunity to participate equally in the decision-making process is inconsistent with both the spirit and purpose of that legislation.
Free, Prior, and Informed Consent requires more than traditional government-led consultation processes. It requires good-faith negotiations with Indigenous peoples with the objective of achieving mutual agreement. This includes respecting Indigenous peoples as rights holders and governments with the authority to participate equally in decisions affecting their lands, territories, resources, and future.
Continuing to repeat they have engaged in Free, Prior and Informed Consent, is absolutely untrue and is disrespectful to First Nations across this country.

The family of Jaali Sutherland-Weenie addressed First Nations-in-Assembly about the tragic mistreatment Jaali experienced in the healthcare system. A member of Beardy's & Okemasis Cree Nation, Jaali tragically passed after complications from pre-eclampsia.
The family called for culturally safe, trauma-informed First Nations healthcare and meaningful systemic change to ensure First Nations women receive equitable care. All present offered their prayers, condolences, and solidarity. Draft Resolution 50/2026, Support for Jaali’s Call to Action and a National Review of Indigenous Patient Safety, was unanimously passed in support of the family's pursuit of truth, healing, accountability, and lasting change.
Did you know, the Liberal government’s Bill C-37 is a return to Stephen Harper’s anti-Indigenous policies that fueled the Idle No More movement. Just like in the Conservatives’ Bill S-8, Bill C-37 was not developed in consultation with First Nations and is in clear violation of Indigenous rights that are confirmed in the Canadian Constitution, that includes international laws and conventions we've signed on to.
If the government does not amend Bill C-37 to uphold First Nations’ human right to clean water, we must all join together to send a clear message to Carney's Liberal government – we will not stay silent in the face of such blatant discrimination. Everyone should have the right to clean drinking water, especially children, families and all individuals across Canada.
The AFN National Chief, Regional Chief, Chiefs and Grand Chiefs held a press conference on Monday to inform media about First Nations priorities, positions, the upcoming First Nations-First Ministers’ Meeting and, across all topics, the importance of full respect for First Nations rights and traditional territories.
