Hi Lucy,
I was inspired by my reflection on the unique challenges women face in trying to stay true to themselves while managing the expectations of others and society.

We have these internal dialogues all the time in our heads, these "voices", or impulses that often guide our decisions before we've even pondered the consequences. That inner struggle, that turmoil of both genius and impetuous child, is what I wanted to explore in a character involved in a high-stakes fight to discover a killer who just might be her.

I wanted a broken heroine who keeps getting up, someone capable of brilliance yet sometimes shallow and vain. Disciplined and self-destructive. Funny, fragile, sensual, maddening, generous in unexpected places, and spectacularly attracted to some of the worst possible choices.

In short, I wanted a heroine every reader could connect with on some level. My books purposely avoid outer descriptions of characters because I feel the outer "shell" obscures the truth of what we all struggle to be... which is just a better version of ourselves. We all have a spark that searches to be true to itself, despite its environment. My books always focus on this spark... the struggle to figure out what truly fulfills us.

I see society as a mirror maze where we often wander lost, showing our shattered flaws right alongside our highest potential—yet our heart never gives up in its search for the one true reflection of itself in the glass. Clara is like that...
