What is happening in the vicinity of Tivat, in Montenegro, is deeply worrying — and rather revealing. Ahead of the EU–Western Balkans Summit, Montenegro barred 87 Serbian citizens from entering the country, citing security concerns. Serbia then responded by holding Montenegrin citizens at Belgrade airport, while long queues and tensions have been reported at the border.
This is exactly the kind of escalation the Western Balkans do not need.
Montenegro is moving forward on its European path, showing that EU integration is possible through reforms, responsibility and a clear pro-European direction. And apparently, that is enough to make President Vučić very nervous.
Instead of staging nationalist theatrics every time a neighbour succeeds, Vučić should take notes. Montenegro is choosing Europe. Serbia deserves the same: democracy, rule of law, good neighbourly relations and a future free from authoritarian distractions.
The region needs dialogue and a shared European perspective — not another strongman performance around a Summit meant to bring the Western Balkans closer to the EU.
