Abrasive Cold Cutting: 12 Secondary Cyclone Access Holes Completed in Just Three 12 Hour Shifts!
In a high-stakes refinery turnaround, our team successfully cut precise access openings into 12 refractory-lined secondary cyclones, all within a tight 3-shift window.
To deliver this precision and speed:
• RGL Designed and fabricated a custom slotted cutting track with 260mm radiused corners to which a bespoke hydraulic carriage was fitted. The tracks were rolled to the cyclone diameter of 1.6 meters to maintain a consistent nozzle standoff distance as the head hydraulically traversed the track.
• We conducted rigorous workshop test cuts followed by two on-site trials months in advance to validate our approach and eliminate surprises.
• Twelve custom tracks were supplied for the turnaround, one being fitted to each cyclone to ensure no time was lost between the cuts. Each access hole took 2 hours to complete, with four holes being carried out at the same time. Demineralised water was used throughout the project with each cut requiring a maximum of 540 litres.
These openings enabled safe internal access for the refractory re-lining teams prior to the new manway panels being fitted.
The result? Job completed on time, within budget and with zero incidents. RGL innovation and teamwork demonstrating yet again that no challenge is too tough.

📷 Hydrodemolition Safety: At the Core of What We Do 📷
Hydrodemolition is a powerful and efficient method for removing concrete using high-pressure water jets. It’s effective, precise, and reduces dust, but it also requires strict safety protocols to protect our team and the environment.
At RGL, we take safety seriously. Here’s how we ensure every hydrodemolition project is performed safely and efficiently:
📷 Pre-Job Site Inspection
Visiting the site before work commences is crucial for identifying risks, ensuring safe operations and developing an accurate RAMS document:
• Site Assessment: Evaluate the work area to identify potential hazards and structural concerns.
• Risk Analysis: Conduct a thorough risk assessment to plan for safe hydrodemolition practices.
• Access & Egress: Verify safe entry and exit points for workers and equipment.
• Utility Checks: Identify and mark nearby utilities to prevent damage.
• Communication Plan: Establish clear lines of communication between on-site teams and project managers.
📷 Site Preparation & Containment
A controlled worksite keeps everyone safe:
• Barriers & Safety Nets: Contain debris and water spray.
• Clear Signage: Marks hazardous areas to prevent unauthorised access.
• Drainage Management: Ensures proper disposal of wastewater and slurry.
📷 Operational Safety Procedures
Safe working practices are non-negotiable:
• Training & Certification: All operators are qualified and up to date.
• Emergency Shutdown: Quick-stop systems for rapid response.
• Clear Communication: Keeps the team aligned and aware.
• Remote Operation: We use remote-controlled robots to reduce worker exposure.
📷 Ongoing Commitment: We regularly inspect and maintain our equipment and ensure our team is always prepared for emergencies.
At RGL, safety isn’t just a box to check, it’s the foundation of everything we do because protecting our people and delivering exceptional results go hand in hand.

Precision Abrasive Water Jet Cutting During Gasholder Decommissioning
During the safe decommissioning of a gasholder, our team deployed advanced abrasive water jet technology to create precise vent holes through the structure.
The image shows the water jet in action, cleanly cutting through double-layered steel plating and a solid rivet head. While abrasive water jet cutting can produce some sparks, they are effectively suppressed by the high-volume water stream, resulting in a truly cold-cutting process with minimal heat generation. This makes it one of the safest and most reliable methods for steel cutting in hazardous, volatile, or potentially explosive environments where traditional hot-cutting techniques cannot be used.
At RGL, safety remains our top priority. Our abrasive water jet services are trusted across the energy, petrochemical, and industrial decommissioning sectors for delivering precision and control in high-risk conditions.

Test cut on a monopile using high-pressure water jetting.
This is just a test to verify the cutting rig’s performance and setup. The team is not cutting the section they’re standing on!
In standard practice for these operations, the rig is first tested above water. Once everything is confirmed to be working correctly, it is lowered to the correct depth below sea-bed level, where the actual internal cut through the monopile is performed from the inside out.
Safe and precise decommissioning in action.

Did you know that neglecting tank cleaning can cause up to 30% more unexpected downtime and expensive environmental risks? In the fast-paced world of industrial operations, keeping tanks clean is not just good practice; it's crucial for safety, efficiency, and regulatory compliance.
Tank cleaning is the key to effective tank management. Here’s why it’s important:
• It prevents contamination during product changes. Residue build-up can harm product quality and lead to cross-contamination.
• It ensures mixing efficiency. Clean surfaces help with uniform blending, reducing energy waste and increasing output.
• It supports routine inspections. A clean interior allows for thorough visual checks and early detection of problems such as corrosion or leaks.
