REST IN POWER, SERGIO SÁNCHEZ!🙏🏽🕊️ It is with profound sadness to share the passing of my good friend and longtime campaign consultant, Sergio Sánchez, who left us last Monday. My deepest condolences to his amazing wife Lupe Sánchez and all his family and friends.💐
Sergio was one of the best community organizers I have ever known. At a time when many thought it was impossible, he stood with me and helped lead our historic victory to the State Assembly in 2010. His belief in our community, his strategic brilliance, hard work ethic, and his tireless dedication made that moment, and so many others, possible.
Sergio’s own experiences and hardships shaped his deep commitment to community work and social justice. He was an immigrant, born in Mexico City in 1966, who came to the United States at the age of 13. Those early experiences instilled in him a lifelong passion to fight for dignity, opportunity, and fairness for others.
Sergio was also a dedicated public servant, serving 10 years on the Salinas City Council representing East Salinas with pride and integrity. He was also a prolific union organizer with the United Farm Workers and SEIU, where he fought tirelessly for the rights and dignity of working people.
During my time in the State Assembly, Sergio served as my District Director in Salinas, where we worked side by side to advance landmark legislative change. Together, we passed AB 60 to provide driver’s licenses to over 1.5 million undocumented immigrants and raised California’s minimum wage to the highest in the nation at the time, along with many other impactful laws that improved the lives of working families.
But beyond his many accomplishments, Sergio was, above all, a loving husband and father who cherished his family deeply. He had a genuine heart for uplifting others, especially our youth, immigrant workers, and working families, and his compassion was felt by all who knew him.
His passing is a tremendous loss to our community. Sergio left us far too soon at just 59 years old, but his legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched. May you Rest In Peace, hermano. We will miss you and thank you for all you did for me, for workers and for our communities!🕊️💐⚖️
Mourning the loss of my friend and campaign consultant. Sergio Sánchez was a remarkable leader, dedicated to improving the entire community around him. His strength, wealth of knowledge and brilliance , humility, integrity, compassion and keen wit will be missed!
