The Supreme Court has ordered fresh elections in 50 municipal wards in Punjab: 28 wards of Patiala Municipal Corporation, all 15 wards of Baghapurana Municipal Council, and 7 wards of Dharamkot Municipal Council. The re-election process has to be completed within six weeks and will be under unusually strict judicial monitoring.

The background is the December 2024 Punjab municipal elections. Candidates had alleged that people associated with the ruling Aam Aadmi Party, along with police personnel and others, obstructed opposition candidates from filing nominations. Allegations included physical assault, nomination papers being snatched or torn, and candidates being prevented from contesting.
