A Historical Reason Why White People Can’t Dance.
Why is Black and Latino music so much more exciting than traditional European music? There’s a real historical reason. West African and Indigenous cultures built music around polyrhythm, call-and-response, and full-body communal dance, where rhythm was tied to celebration, spirituality, and survival; even when drums were banned after events like the Stono Rebellion of 1739, the beat evolved into clapping, blues, gospel, jazz, salsa, samba, funk, hip-hop, and reggaeton — music designed to move you.
Meanwhile, much of European tradition was shaped by church and aristocratic courts, emphasizing written composition and seated listening, and when artists like Elvis became famous, they drew heavily from Black musical traditions — proving where much of the modern groove really came from.
Every time we see a white person with a vibe or rhythm, we automatically know they have had afrocentric exposure. What do you think?
