extends previous discussion of the effects of noise on signaling ... with consequences for natural selection, development, communication, language, and consciousness ... it might shake your preconceptions ... replies welcome!
Noise and signal detection still need more attention than they are getting. Harvard Univ Press has a sale until 24 July - search for Noise Matters. And here's a new book with extended discussion. Lots to think about - let me know what YOU think! @AnimBehSociety@sse_evolution
@SteveNowickiDU Right on! You don't have to be tired when retired. I retired at 69 and have written three books since, two all science, one all fun (check out amazon), and I have a new research direction (see my website). My wife and I did our sailboat phase decades ago, with our kids!
We returned to North Carolina on 14 June just as the first mosquitoes were appearing in northern Scandinavia ... any later and the Arctic is a different place!
At the end of our visit to Scandinavia we of course had to visit the Linnetradgarden in Uppsala, the garden Linnaeus adminstered for 40 years. HIs favorite flower Linnaeus borealis was in bloom in the garden ... #evolution#Linnaeus
We couldn't find Linnaeus borealis on the two hikes we had time for on Linnaeus's trails used for teaching (Linnestig), but we did find Round-leaved Sundew and Herb Paris ....
We continued southward from Arctic Norway into Finland ... where we visited many "lintutorni" bird-watching towers in natural reserves ... Finland must have hundreds ... fabulous country! #Finland#lintutorni
Minna and I continued on to Arctic Norway where we located 3 leks of Ruffs beside tundra lakes 2-4 June ... with lots of action by males but females were still just beginning to visit. Males used the flats by this lake ...
All males perfomed flutter-jumps when females passed but white males jumped higher.
Our thirteenth lekking species (outside the Neotropics) since 2014!
Just returned from Scandinavia (after a 3 year postponement by covid) -- Minna and I watched our 12th lekking species since 2014 ... Great Snipe on a mountaintop in Sweden! Here's the view at midnight ... 20 or so GRSN are in there somewhere ...
Lots of action by males and a female or two despite near-zero (C) temps and a north wind. In hummocky tundra with deep (50 cm) troughs males dart like rodents through the troughs to encounter rival males and females with asymmetrical displays that reveal white on tail and wings
