6.9GWh of grid-scale BESS entered operation across 74 locations

In May 2024, 6.9GWh was installed across 74 locations in the global grid market, a y-o-y increase of 71%. Monthly deployments fell 11% against April 2024, however this seasonal trend has been seen in previous years. China’s deployments bounced back in May to account for 61% of global deployments.

Global EV sales reached 1.3 million units in May 2024, growing by 19% y-o-y.

Historically, large battery energy storage systems have capacities between 3-4MWh however, since mid-2023, companies have been developing systems over 5MWh, reducing project costs and system footprints. By April this year, five companies had released systems exceeding 6MWh, including CATL, SVolt, and BYD.
