Breaking: Bangladesh’s new government has decided to appoint a new chief prosecutor for the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), replacing Tajul Islam. Advocate Aminul Islam is reportedly under consideration for the position. Aminul Islam was previously a member of the legal team that represented BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia — the mother of current Prime Minister Tarique Rahman — in the corruption case that led to her imprisonment.

A source has confirmed that Tajul Islam has already been informally notified of the decision to replace him. Tajul Islam declined to comment when approached for confirmation. Attempts at obtaining comment from government spokesmen have been unsucessful at the time of writing.

The ICT is currently prosecuting crimes against humanity cases against Awami League politicians and law enforcement officials accused of involvement in the killing and injury of protesters and bystanders during the July 2024 protests, which led to the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government. The tribunal is also handling cases relating to enforced disappearances between 2009 and 2024. To date, three trials have been completed.

Three days ago, Tajul Islam told journalists that he had no indication at that time that the new government intended to replace him or other members of the prosecution team.

বাংলাদেশের গণমাধ্যমের জন্য আজ একটি কালো দিন। আজ বাংলাদেশ সংবাদ সংস্থা (বাসস) এর এমডি ও প্রধান সম্পাদক মাহবুব মোর্শেদ, এখন টেলিভিশনের মাহমুদ রাকিব, মুজাহিদ শুভ, মো. বেলায়েত হোসেন, মোহাম্মদ আজহারুজ্জামান মোট পাঁচজন সাংবাদিককে 'জোরপূর্বক চাকরিচ্যুত' করার ষড়যন্ত্র করা হয়েছে। ঘটনার পরিক্রমায় যতদূর জানলাম, তাদের কাউকে জোরপূর্বক অফিস থেকে বের করা হয়েছে, আবার কাউকে কাউকে অফিস প্রাঙ্গনে ঢুকতেই দেওয়া হয়নি।

এটাই তাহলে বিএনপি সরকারের প্রথম কার্যদিবসে গণমাধ্যমের জন্য বিশেষ পুরষ্কার। তাদের অপরাধ? তাদের অপরাধ হলো জুলাইয়ের পক্ষে থাকা। জুলাইকে ধারণ করা।

চব্বিশের জুলাই বিপ্লবে নয় দফা প্রচারে এই সাংবাদিকদের ভূমিকা ছিল অনেক। জুলাইপন্থী সাংবাদিক হওয়ার কারণে তাঁদেরকে আজ হেনস্থা করা হয়েছে। মব করে চাকরীচ্যুত করা হচ্ছে।

আমি এসব ঘটনার তীব্র নিন্দা ও প্রতিবাদ জানাচ্ছি। সরকার, তথ্য ও সম্প্রচার মন্ত্রী, সংশ্লিষ্ট গণমাধ্যমের প্রধানদের বলছি, কারো উপর জুলুম করবেননা। সাংবাদিকদের কাজের স্বাধীনতা, গণমাধ্যমের স্বাধীনতা এবং সর্বোপরি গণতন্ত্রিক অধিকার নিশ্চিত করুন।

ক্ষমতা পাবার ২৪ ঘণ্টার মধ্যে আওয়ামীলীগ দ্বারা প্রভাবিত বিএনপির গ্রাসরুট হিংস্র হয়ে উঠেছে। মাত্র ২৪ ঘন্টায় যদি অবস্থা এই হয়, আগামী পাঁচ বছরে এরা কি করবে? অতীত থেকে বিএনপি কোন শিক্ষা তো নেয়নি, হাসিনার পতন থেকেও তারা শিক্ষা নেয়নি।

২৪ ঘণ্টায় বিএনপি নামা:

১. মাত্র কুয়েট ভিসির উপর ছাত্রদলের ক্যাডাররা করছে হা ম লা!

২. দিনাজপুরে ছেলে জামাতে পুলিং এজেন্ট থাকায় বাবারে মা র ছে বিএনপির কিছু সন্ত্রাসী! বাড়ি পু ড়ি য়ে ফেলার হু ম কি!

৩. পঞ্চগড়ে বাড়িঘর, দোকানপাটে বিএনপির সন্ত্রাসীদের হা ম লা! অনেকে আ হ ত, অভিযোগ এনসিপির সার্জিস আলমের।

৪. বাগেরহাট ৪ আসনে আল আমিন নামের এক ছেলেরে পি ড়া ইয়া হাসপাতালে পাঠাইছে বিএনপির ক্যাডাররা!

৫. ফুলগাজির মুন্সিরহাটের জামাত নেতার দোকানে হা ম লা ছাত্রদল নেতার!

৬. নোয়াখালী সেনবাগে জামাত নেতার উপর হা ম লা ছাত্রদল ক্যাডারের!

৭. করম মুহুরি পাড়াতে কয়েকজনরে র ক্তা ক্ত করে হাসপাতালে পাঠাইছে বিএনপির ক্যাডাররা!

৮. ভোট দেয়া নিয়ে তর্কের জেরে কুড়িগ্রামে জামায়াত নেতাকে কুপি য়ে জ খ ম করছে বিএনপির লোকেরা!

৯. খুলনাতে ঢাবির এক শিক্ষার্থীর বাড়িতে আগুন দিলো, তার মা বোনকে পিটিয়ে হাসপাতালে পাঠাইলো তাকে আবার জ বা ই করার হুমকি দিলো ছাত্রদল নেতারা!

১০. পাটগ্রামে এক ঘরে হা ম লা করে ঘরের জিনিসপত্র লুট করে নিয়া গেছে বিএনপির নেতারা!

১১. রবিশালে বাবা জামাত করার কারণে গাড়িতে হা মলা করলো ছাত্রদলের ক্যাডাররা!

১২. চট্টগ্রামে সাবেক শিবিরের নেতার বাড়িতে বিএনপির নেতাদের হা ম লা।

১৩. কক্সবাজার চকরিয়ায় জামাত নেতার বাড়িতে বিএনপির ক্যাডারদের দফায় দফায় হা ম লা।

১৪. কুষ্টিয়াতে এনসিপির নেতার বাড়িতে বিএনপির ক্যাডারদের হা ম লা।

১৫. ফেনীতে বিজয়ী ঋণখেলাপী বিএনপির নেতা জামাতের অনেক কর্মীর বাড়িতে করছে হা ম লা!

১৬. সিরাজগঞ্জে জামাত আমিরের বাড়িতে আ গু ণ দিলো বিএনপির নেতা।

১৭. সন্দ্বিপে জামাত নেতাদের বাড়িতে হা ম লা বিএনপির নেতারা।

১৮. দিরাই পৌর শহরে জামাত নেতার উপর হা ম লা!
