I asked Claude about content-rich videos displacing reading and implications for reading comp, particulary in science/history at the secondary level. Any SOR people want to push back, clarify, or refute what Claude is telling me here? @DTWillingham@karenvaites@natwexler
@karenvaites@DTWillingham@natwexler@C_Hendrick@profbeckyallen Interesting but for the most part focused on AI-generated content and/or algorithmic feeds for individual learning. My hypothesis is that some part of the decline since 2015 is that teachers showing youtube (curated, whole-class) is displacing textbook reading.
@TheWritingRevol Hey @TheWritingRevol , I'm enjoying the new tool. I work with 8th grade and secondary students who need to cite evidence from the text (specific quotes). Do you have any scaffolds to help them do this effectively?
If you had to guess, based on your own experience, what percentage of kids who go on to college made it through MS and HS without ever reading an entire novel cover to cover?
@mpershan I think it’s a semi-frequent math circle topic? Worth searching for “math circle modular arithmetic”, quick hit https://t.co/G1yNdrPTM9 but likely various versions out there for older/younger. Can check my physical books tomorrow.
@MrLandesman FYI -- the free curriculum you can download here https://t.co/AL66Z1qiRD is...also Illustrative Math. It was developed as an OER and not commercial. (screenshot from Core Knowledge Grade 5 materials.) I could be wrong but I don't think any IM version is commercial.
@LaneWalker2 (Also worth usual caveat DI as an instructional method vs a curriculum gets conflated often, as an instructional method alone it’s especially difficult to isolate and quantify effects)
@LaneWalker2 Anecdotally, seen similar in math—my feeling is that more often that not it raises the floor, but has less effect on the ceiling. Overall more depends on the teacher and other variables.
@benorlin Choose your fighter:
"“If I had to choose between betraying my country and betraying my friend, I hope I should have the guts to betray my country.”
-E.M. Forster
"…whoever places a friend / above the good of his country, he is nothing: / I have no use for him"
-Sophocles
@dylanpkane I remember this being really tricky for kids! I tried to have them do some extra practice on Khan and they totally bombed. Concept was hard enough, but also added "constant of proportionality" lang. I wrote at a least a dozen scaffolded practice activities--did one/day for weeks
