Vagrant Story's use of vertex colors to bake lighting and shadowing is the work of legendary artists.
In interviews they said most of them only had experience with 2D. It was their expertise on 2D and pixel art that allowed them to pull off something like this
Street Fighter character artwork.
This artwork for the 1987 game was created by popular Capcom artist Bengus in 1994. While it might seem weird for artwork to be created for a game that released years ago, Capcom was laying the groundwork for Alpha / Zero lore during this time.
