Understanding comes from a process of developing a conceptual framework for a topic. Think of the framework as beginning with a single Lego Block. It grows and takes shape when students have the chance to connect new blocks of knowledge and ideas to it.

Want to build more student ownership in learning? During lesson planning, ask yourself this question. What do I want students to uncover in this lesson? Framing this way helps us think more about how kids will make meaning than what we are going to tell them about.

@ric_fisher My daughter excitedly shared during dinner today how she figured something out in math, w/ the right tools. She’s so proud, I bet she will not forget this learning experience. I’m thankful for Haley London, her math teacher who allowed this.

We tend to remember things we figure out for ourselves. Allowing students to make meaning on their own can be scary. However, when we acknowledge that we can always jump in and help if necessary, we give ourselves permission to let go a little more.

We can teach faster than students can learn. In a time when much of our teaching feels very compressed into a finite amount of time due to online teaching, A/B schedule, etc . Flip the script by focusing on the big ideas. Essential questions are an easy and great way to begin.

Think about something you feel you understand well. Then think about how you became so informed on the topic. It is likely that you spent a lot of time focused on reading, watching, using, discussing and reflecting. That’s Deeper Learning and the opposite of broader coverage.
