Sold Barstool to PENN for $551 million.
Bought it back for $1.
Just signed an 8-figure Netflix deal for three podcasts.

The story is wild.

PENN bought Barstool in two tranches. $163 million for 36% in January 2020. $388 million for the remaining 64% in February 2023. Six months after closing on full ownership, PENN sold 100% back to Dave for one dollar and recorded an $850 million write-down.

Most people stop the story there. The comeback is the better half.

The day Dave got Barstool back, he was free of PENN's regulated-industry restrictions. Within six months, Barstool signed a multi-year sports betting media partnership with DraftKings, the same DraftKings that ESPN would later run to after PENN imploded.

July 2025: Fox Sports signed a wide-ranging content partnership and put Dave on Big Noon Kickoff. Wake Up Barstool launched on FS1 that September.

October 2025: the Internet Invitational, Barstool's six-episode YouTube golf event for influencers, hit 25 million views.

December 2025: Netflix signed an 8-figure deal to exclusively stream Pardon My Take, Spittin' Chiclets, and the Ryen Russillo Show starting early 2026.

PENN's stock peaked at $130 in March 2020, the month they bought into Barstool. It trades at $17 today.

Dave got $551 million to lease his brand to PENN for 36 months. Bought it back for a dollar. Signed Fox, DraftKings, and Netflix in the 18 months after.

He called it the greatest trade of all time on Club Shay Shay. From PENN's side, he's not wrong.
