Homework does little to improve achievement and can actually have negative effects, especially at elementary level. Recess however has many positive effects such as improved self regulation of emotions, improved interpersonal skills and focus! And should never be taken away.
No one should care how a kindergartener compares on a standardized test with kindergarteners around the country. They should care if the kindergartener feels cared for, valued, and actually enjoys coming to school to learn. Its Kindergarten!
Doing mathematics with just pencil and paper is historically—hence, pedagogically—important. Almost all of the deep insights into numbers and geometry occurred without calculators and technology. The art of math lies in the creativity of the brain.
Besides the many issues with standardized testing. Most students have no idea what they missed on the tests and teachers don't either. And typically by time they get results students have moved on to next grade. Yet, we spend billions and place such importance on them.
@DrBradJohnson I don’t know where you are based Brad. At my school we have 3 play breaks. Outside, minimal rules, kids up trees, out in the rain! We love it!
@pryorcommitment Not all schools get a chaplain either! Additional counselling and wellbeing specialists desperately needed! Maslow before Bloom Roger!
@johnqgoh Couldn’t agree more @johnqgoh start with taking the 10000 (yep thats the number) of non school based teachers and put them back in schools to do the real work of supporting children!
@FairerEduNSW We need more people in schools on the ground supporting kids. Every new policy, accountability, idea that comes down the line pulls us away from that. Its kids that are suffering because of the huge disconnect between those in school and those that are not!
@AlboMP I have voted liberal all my life. I am so tempted to vote ALP if only you could outline what you would do better / differently. Pointing out the libs flaws is easy.. any mupppet can see them! So what do you do differently
@FairerEduNSW@NSWEducation What about a whole of DoE approach for term 1. Student services staff, HSLO’s PSL’s etc etc are placed in schools to cover the inevitable shortages? That would be a real support to schools ?
@simon_mulready@nswppa I did 3 playground duties today and desperately need a casual to cover a class tomorrow or i’m back on the tools. Feel like a days casual work mr mulready? Ha ha ha!
